Chapter 2: What's in a Patronus?

"Come here, Haley." I went and stood with my brother. "I'm gonna teach you all how to conjure a Patronus, its the only way to protect yourself from Dementors. Okay, Haley, raise your wand." I did as instructed. "Now think of a time where you were truly happy, a memory. Let it fill you up and when your ready say 'Expecto Patronum.'"

At first I couldn't think a memory to use, then I remembered the day last year when my brother found me. I replayed it in my head until it felt like I was there. "Expecto Partronum." I said and a white blue light came out of my wand for a minute, then disappeared.

"That's alright." Harry said. "This is very advanced stuff, maybe the memory wasn't strong enough. Pick a different one and try it again." 

I didn't think I had another memory. The night of the Yule Ball, the first time Draco had kissed me while we danced by the Great Hall Stairs. "Expecto Patronum." I tried again, and the light happened again. Only this time it grew and formed a beautiful Unicorn. 

Harry smiled and hugged me. "A unicorn. I was expecting a doe to be your patronus." 

"Why did you think that?" 

"Mom's patronus was a doe and Dad's was a stag. Mine's a stag so I just assumed yours would be a doe, like Mom." I frowned. I was kinda sad mine wasn't the same as our mom's, I guess I'm not as like her as everyone thought.

Hermione had find a book in the library about what patronus animals mean and read mine. "The Unicorn patronus means that the person who conjured it has 'trust and vision, emotion and intuition, is gentle, selfless, mysterious and wild.' That fits you at a 'T', Hal." 

"All right everyone, give a try. If you have a hard time, force on the memory harder or change it. It only works with really strong happy memories." Harry said and everyone, eventually, was able to conjure they own patronus. After we finished, everyone wanted to know what theirs stood for, so everyone passed the book around during our break. After everyone had a turn, Harry wanted us to practice stunning again. 

"Hermione. Ron. Why don't you two show everyone how its done in a dual setting." Hermione and Ron took the spots on either side of the room. The boys all lined up on one side and the girls on the other expect me. I stood next to the twins.

I leaned over right before the started and said. "He'll last a second." 

They both said at the same time. "You're on." And we watched as Hermione, half a second after Harry said begin, knocked Ron on his ass with her stun. The twins both sighed, rolled their eyes and gave me a galleon each.

"Thank you." I said with a smirk. 

Ron wobbled over to us. "I let her do that. Its was just good manners." 

I patted him on the shoulder. "Sure you did, Ronald. You're such a gentleman. " And walked over to the group of girls laughing with Hermione.

Draco and I met up that night. He was telling me about how Umbridge had asked the Slytherin house to help her catch us breaking her rules. "She basically told us that if we, as the prefects, didn't join we were true Slytherins." 

"That seems a little harsh. She was Slytherin too, yes?" 

He nodded. "Crabbe and Goyle both joined right away and are on me about joining. I said I wanted to focus on a paper first before joining but I really just wanted to talk to you about it. What should I do?" 

I sighed. "Draco, I'm not going to tell you what to do. I'm not your parents." He took my hands. "If you think you should, to appease your friends, then do it. I know where your heart really is."
