I stepped into the Black house and it was dead quiet. I placed my bags in my room and walked through the quiet house, the dark house. Kreacher was cleaning like always when I found. "Mistress." He said, respectively.
"Kreacher, don't call me that. Please just call me Haley."
He looked at me. "As you wish."He started to speak but stopped himself.
I sighed. "Speak freely, Kreacher." He had never be treated with this much respect. Sirius was nice to him but never like this.
"Are you doing alright since Master Sirius passed?"
I smiled at him. He seemed very mad and hateful, but he really was just doing what people had done to him. "I'm doing okay. Would the mistress be mad if I brightened the house a bit? It's just a little morbid in here without Sirius."
He thought it over. "You are my mistress now, Haley. Do as you wish." He finally said. I made a list of things to pick up and he went shopping for me. I unpacked my stuff and let Mist out of her cage. When Kreacher returned home, I kept myself busy. Repainting the walls and moldings, I knew I could use magic for it but I still had the Trace on me and I needed the distraction. Kreacher helped me as much as he could. We placed flowers in vases all over the house but I left Sirius' and his brother's room untouched.
After several hours, all the hallways were done, the stairs were refinished and I was exhausted. I spent the rest of my night writing letters to everyone, Harry, Hermione, Ginny and Draco. I told them about all the work I'd done and that I missed them. I wrote in Harry's how quiet and alone I felt in the house. I wrote in Draco's how much I wished he was with me. I sent the letters out that night and got into bed. I spent a long time staring at the picture Draco gave me, watching my parents kiss and smile at each other. "I promise I watch out for him, Mom. Just like you did for us."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My next project was the kitchen, I spent a few weeks in there with Kreacher. He also started to teach me how to cook and we enjoyed each others company. I talked to him about being a house elf and asked him if he ever thought about life if he wasn't a house elf.
"Kreacher never thought about it. He has served the noble house of Black since birth." He replied then there was a knock on the door.
He started to for the door. "I can get it." I grabbed a towel and wiped my hands. I opened the door to see Hermione. "What are you doing here?"
"I told my parents that you invited me to stay until school started in two weeks."
I looked at her. "I didn't invite you."
"I know, silly." She said and handed me her school trunk. "I was worried about you and wanted to make sure you were doing okay."
"I'm fine, Mione. I've been keeping myself busy." I turned to show her the foyer of the house.
"You did this all by yourself?"
I nodded. "Me and Kreacher." Kreacher came around the corner.
"Yes, Haley?" I smiled.
"This is my friend, Hermione. Hermione, you remember Kreacher. Help her with her things, please." She smiled at him and he led her up the stairs. I turned to close the door and saw someone I never expected standing on my porch.
"That is pretty impressive, Haley." He said with that damn smirk.
I jumped into his arms. "What are you doing here?"I said into his shoulder.
He laughed. "I ran into Hermione at Diagon Alley, she said she was worried about you and wanted to take a trip." He put me down and pushed my hair out of my face. "I can only stay for a few days, my parents think I'm at Blaze's."
"I don't care. I'm just really happy to see you." I said and kissed him. We spent the night talking and joking around. Hermione went to bed around midnight and Kreacher retired after dinner. "I really glad you're here." I said while we sat on the couch together.
"Haley, I have to tell you something."
"What? What's going on?"
He sighed and laced his fingers through mine. "Things are happening. The Dark Lord and his followers have taken up shelter in my house. They've been asking me to do things, I've been complying but I'm scared they'll catch on. I don't know how much longer I can keep this up."
"I know. I don't know how much more I can take either." I sighed and leaned into his shoulder. "Do you ever think about telling people? About us, I mean. It's just, I hate lying to everyone. I hate hiding, makes it feel like what we have isn't right."
He squeezed my hand. "I know, I feel the same way. We only have to hide until this is over, then we can really be together." He sounded so positive about our future, but I wasn't.
"What if He wins?"
"He won't. I have to believe that."
I smiled. "I wish I was as positive as you." We spent the next three days, talking about nothing and everything expect the war that was raging around us. I spent my days teaching myself and them new spells and my nights with Draco asleep next me. When he finally had to leave, I felt like I was being taking off life support. He told me how much he wished he could stay because of me and because he hated being in his house. I told him that I believed he could do it and that it was only a little while before we were back at school.
When he left, Hermione hugged me. "He loves you so much, Hal. I'm both happy for you and hate you." That made me laugh. "You know, now that I've spend some time with him, he's not as bad as he lets people think."
The two of us spent the rest of our time just being girl friends. We played games, did each other nails, exchanged clothes and talked about who we thought was cute in our house. Having her there made me feel less alone and reminded me that I was still cared for even though I didn't have anyone taking care of me.
I was painting her nails one night when a thought popped into my head. "What's going on with you and Ron?" She looked at me like a deer in headlights. "I mean you both clearly like each other why not just say it?"
"How do you know he likes me?" She said, perking up. "Did he say something?" I shrugged and smiled at her. "Maybe I will say something to him about it. In passing so he doesn't get suspicious."
I went to sleep that night, thinking that this year at Hogwarts wasn't going to be like any of the others.
End of Book 2: Order of the Phoenix! Tomorrow, I'll start Book 3: Half Blood Prince. I know I'm doing these really fast but I'm on break from school and have all the time in the world to work on them. I'm also thinking about my doing a sequel, what do you think?
