We arrived at the hospital, with paparazzi all standing around the car, with big cameras. Why couldn’t they leave me alone for one day?
Kenny got out first, and guarded Diane and I as we began to make our way through the flashing crowd.
“Justin are you okay?!”
“Justin, how’s Emily?”
“Justin, Over here!”
They all screamed, and I wanted to punch them. I knew it was their job, but for god’s sake.
Finally, as we made our way into the hospital, everything was calm again.
“That’s crazy!” Diane exclaimed, referring to the paparazzi's.
“I know, hah!”
I went and stood at the reception table.
“How may I help you? Wait you were in here not long ago, weren’t you?” The receptionist stared, confused.
“Yes. I was wondering if I could see Emily Brown?” I asked, biting my lip.
She smirked, and nodded. “Room 80” she said, as I walked in the familiar direction of her room.
I opened the door, letting Diane enter first. “My baby” she wailed, and sat next to Emily.
She grasped her hand tightly, and kissed it. I knew I could relate, because I felt the same way.
I came over to Emily, and sat down beside Diane.
“Justin, she looks terrible.”
“I know.” I begun to feel doubtful.
Her heart monitor echoed the room. It was going 60 beats per-minute. Which was slower than usual.
I wanted Emily to wake up more than anything.
“Hey guys.”
I looked up to see a scrawny, male doctor at the foot of Emily’s bed.
“I’m going to have to ask you to leave. We have to run a few tests for Emily’s well-fare. Sorry about that.” he croaked, and I hated him for saying that.
“That’s fine. Thank you doctor” Diane spoke, as she kissed Emily on the cheek.
“Goodbye sweetheart, I love you.”
Kenny and Diane left the room, as I began to speak to Emily. I studied her features again, from her perfectly shaped eyebrows, to her shining lips. I wanted to talk to her again. I missed her more than anything.
“Emily, I love you. Stay safe” I whispered as a tear slid down my cheek, and onto her hand. I kissed her lightly on the cheek.
I stood up and began to exit the room. But as I was just about to exit the room, I heard something peculiar.
A sudden speed up of beating. Was it her heart monitor. I turned around in shock. It was!
I could see her hand twitching, and the doctor stood there, mesmerized and in shock.
I rushed to her side, so I could be the first person, She’s open her eyes to.
“Diane get in here!” I yelled loudly, so she could hear.
I heard her enter the room, and she gasped.
Suddenly Emily’s eye-lids began to twitch, and slightly open. My heart began to speed up too. I smoothed her hand with my fingers and waited for her to open her eyes fully.
“Emily” I whispered, getting closer to her face.
“What? Where am I?” she croaked, her voice unsteady.
“You’re in the hospital” I laughed, touching her face.
Her eyes began to focus on me, finally. But her eyes became scared. She frowned and pushed my hand away.
“Who are you?” she asked angrily.
“What?” I laughed confused. “Nice joke Emily.”
“Get away from me, I don’t know you” she said, sitting upright.
Diane rushed to my side. “Sweetheart, it’s Justin.”
“Mum!” she wailed and Diane put her arms around Emily. When Diane pulled away from Emily, she looked at me deeply.
“Emily, It’s me.” I frowned.
“I don’t know you” she stated, and it almost seemed her words had wrapped around my heart and torn it apart.
Diane and I exchanged glances. I looked away at the doctor.
“What’s wrong with her? Why can’t she remember me?” I asked him.
He shrugged, “I’ll have to run her tests. This is a miracle, we didn’t expect her to wake up for weeks.”
I nodded, and faked a smile.
I reached for Emily’s hand, but she pulled it away.
“Leave me alone” she ordered.
I left the room as she’d asked. But Diane stayed for a bit longer. I began to pace the waiting room for longer than I’d wanted and Kenny just sat in the chair watching me.
“Why doesn’t she remember me Kenny?” I sobbed, I could feel myself wanting to cry.
“I don’t know man, I mean maybe she’s just in a state.”
The doctor appeared in the room, with Diane by his side.
“Any news?” I asked desperately.
“We just took the tests, we’re running them now to see what the problem is.”
“Do you have any idea’s of what it could be?”
The doctor hesitated, and looked down at his feet.
“Do you?” I grew impatient, and began tapping my foot in a rhythm against the floor.
“There’s a possibility that she has..uh, Long term memory loss.”
My heart sunk, and I began to feel the need to vomit. I guess from shock.
I covered my mouth with my hand, and sprinted to the toilet. As soon as I’d locked one of the doors of the toilets, I lost it. I threw up everything, along with everything feeling inside of me.
Once I was done, I began to cry. I couldn’t help it. I felt like a little kid again, and I just wanted to be alone.
No, I wanted my mum. I needed her, because at that moment, she seemed like the only person who might have had a chance of knowing, the way I was feeling.
