The Book of Dragons

This might have been one of the worst days of my life, Hiccup thought. Someone knows that he and Heather kissed. They might even tell Astrid and that was Hiccup's biggest fear; losing someone else that he loves. He had to find out who saw them kiss and try to persuade them to keep this secret from Astrid... before Hiccup could tell her himself, of course. Honestly, Hiccup still wasn't sure himself if he was going to tell Astrid about this incident with Heather yet, but he knew that it would be much worse for her to find out from someone else who saw them.

Hiccup paced back and forth in his house. "How didn't I hear a person in the front," he whispered to himself, "I knew I heard something drop but I thought that is was Toothless playing upstairs." Hiccup ran hopefully up the stairs to his room to find Toothless nowhere to be found. It couldn't have been him, Hiccup thought.

                                                                               -----------------

Lying on his bed, Hiccup recited the same words over and over. "The Book of Dragons, The Book of Dragons, The Book of Dragons..." He was trying to figure out who could've been at his doorstep last night instead of going to sleep.

Hiccup didn't sleep during that night. He was too confused and too stressed to sleep. He had to find out who this mysterious person was at his doorstep. He had to, tonight, before the person could tell. Before he'd lose Astrid forever. Hiccup thought logically. Who, other than myself, keeps the Book of Dragons at their house. That's when the answer hit him hard. It was so obvious.

"Fishlegs!" Hiccup yelled.  He jumped out of bed and ran  out the door with the Book of Dragons.

Hiccup quickly ran to Fishlegs' house in the darkness of the night. The moonlight was shining bright enough to help Hiccup see the path clearly. Panting, Hiccup finally reached the front of his door. He knocked softly, and no one answered. He knocked on the door again. Soon, his knocks gradually got louder and more anxious the more stressed Hiccup got. But after stressful minutes of knocking and waiting, Fishlegs finally answered the door.

"Hiccup, what are you doing here in the middle of the night?" asked Fishlegs as he yawned.

Hiccup hadn't noticed how late it was until he looked up to the sky to see the sparkling stars contrast the darkness of the night.

"Well, I was going to give this back to you," Hiccup said confidently. "I think you dropped it on my front door just a few... hours... ago..." Hiccup said slowly, waiting for Fishlegs' answer. He was hopeful that it was Fishlegs that brought the book at his doorstep. Then, he could have a friendly conversation with Fishlegs to persuade him to keep this little secret before Hiccup could figure out what to do.

Hiccup's big, hopeful smile diminished when he saw Fishlegs' confused look at the book. He began to question his hypothesis of Fishlegs being the mystery person who brought him the book. Then, a look of realization covered Fishlegs' entire face. Relief washed over Hiccup's face as he began to smile again.

"Oh Hiccup, I actually gave the Book of Dragons to Astrid around noon yesterday. She told me she needed it to take down the notes of what she learned from her dragon with Ryder."

The sound of Fishlegs' voice echoed in his head. I actually gave the Book of Dragons to Astrid...Astrid...Astrid. Hiccup felt his heart plummet down to his stomach as it kept pounding hard to the rhythm of a fast beating drum. He saw Fishlegs' lips move but he could hear anything that he said. His vision started to blur to weird, shapes that surrounded him. Hiccup felt dizzy as the blurry shapes that he once saw were moving around and spinning. Hiccup couldn't feel his legs as they buckled, causing him to fall hard onto the ground. He thought he heard Fishlegs' faint voice calling him, but by the time Hiccup's head hit the ground, everything turned black. All he heard now was the sound of his fast beating heart slowly subsiding to faint pulses.

A/N: Hey, it's Vanessa. I wrote this part a couple of months ago but I never thought it was good enough to post, but I promised myself that if my story got 800 reads, I'll post it. So, after a little past 800 reads, I posted it. Note that I'm not super proud of this chapter, but if you like it, that'd mean a lot to me. Thanks to the people who continued reading my story even though I haven't posted in a while. Hopefully I'll post another soon. Please don't be upset if I don't post in 2 months again.  Also, comment if you want more. Your comments will motivate me to continue writing and posting faster. Happy reading!
