Hiccup blacked out, but only for a while. His consciousness only came back a couple of hours later during the night. Hiccup's eyes opened to the sight of Fishlegs' ceiling. As he sat up, he realized that he was lying on his friend's bed, while Fishlegs was currently fast asleep and snoring on the floor at the edge of the bed. Hiccup didn't remember much of what happened after he found the book on his front step, so waking up in a house that wasn't his was much of a shock to him. Once he spotted the Book of Dragons on the floor next the Fishlegs, his memory caught up to what happened before he fainted.
Hiccup rushed out of the house with the book in his hands. He ran to Astrid's house with the sole purpose to explain to her what happened last night, and how he didn't want to hurt her at all. He expected her to scream at him, or punch him at least. He wouldn't be surprised if she did both, or even something worse. He thought that he would even deserve anything she would do to him. He wouldn't blame her if she even broke up with him. It was definitely not what he wanted, but after what he did to her, could he hate her if she did? No, he thought. His answer was no. He could never hate Astrid. He thought that she had every right to hate him, even if he didn't want her to. He even hated himself, even more so than how much Astrid could hate him at this moment.
It was dawn when he walked outside. The sun was shining brightly so early in the morning that it seemed that it was going to be the most beautiful day Berk has even seen. Every person he passed was overwhelmed by the beauty of nature, like they just noticed it for the first time. It lightened their day, but it only did the opposite for Hiccup. It seems like everyone is twenty times happier, only when you're not, Hiccup thought, and it was true.
Hiccup walked with his head down to avoid looking at everyone's happy expressions, but to also hide from them. He didn't want anyone noticing him when he was so vulnerable. He only wanted to talk to Astrid, and Astrid alone.
Hiccup was exhausted. It seemed as if he was asleep for only a few minutes during that night when he actually spent the whole night asleep. Hiccup had dark rings underneath his eyes and his hair was all messed up as if he had a reckless sleep, tossing and turning all night. He felt weak, like he could collapse onto the ground. The only thing that strengthened him has his hope to fix things with Astrid.
Hiccup finally reached the front step of Astrid's house. He felt an excruciating pain at the back of his head, but ignored it and knocked on her door. He waited for an answer, but there was none. Hiccup sat at the entrance of her doorstep, pondering over where she could've been at dawn on this very morning. The very morning after seeing her boyfriend kiss the girl she doesn't like.
Hiccup thought that she could've just decided not to answer the door. Maybe she knew it was Hiccup. It didn't matter if she was gone or if she didn't answer his knocks now because Hiccup was willing to wait all day to see her and talk to her. If he had to, he'd wait forever.
I knew that something would've gone wrong with this plan, he thought as he waited, it was Snotlout who came up with it after all.
"How could I be so foolish to think this plan would work," Hiccup said. The last thing he wanted was to lose another person he loved. His father passed away a year ago and his mother left again, even after not being around for twenty years pretending to be dead and training dragons. All he had was Toothless and Astrid, and Toothless is a dragon. Though Astrid seemed ruthless, tough and cold-hearted at first, she has the biggest heart than anyone else he knows. She understands Hiccup and always achieves in making him feel confident and happy.
After a while of waiting, "Where's the chief?" was what Hiccup heard a crowd of people ask a couple of feet away. He knew that he should go check on what happened, but he didn't want to do any chief duties at this time. He ran and hid against the wall on the side of Astrid's house. He sat down and continued waiting when he heard people talking from behind the house. He was quite curious to find out where the voices came from. He dropped the Book of Dragons on his side and slowly approached the edge of the side wall, where he saw the complete view of the backyard. It was huge, surrounded by trees and nature. At the far back, just before the trees overwhelmed the forest, there was something Hiccup could see. At first, he couldn't seem to make out of what he saw until he knew what it was. He knew what was going on.
He didn't want to believe it, he didn't want it to be true. He rubbed his eyes, as if what he saw was from his own imagination, but he opened his eyes to the same view as before. That dreadful view. Hiccup quickly turned away and walked back to where he was. He wanted to leave as soon as possible so he ran, but he tripped over something. When he looked down, it was the Book of Dragons that he tripped over...again. Out of anger, he kicked the book against the wall. When that didn't have much of an effect on the book, he kicked it again, and again, until the book was ruined. Hiccup leaned against the wall of the side of the house, panting, and cried.
----------------
When Hiccup was calm again, he picked up the book and walked to the front entrance to place the book at Astrid's front step. She will know I was here, Hiccup thought. He turned away, walked towards his house and didn't dare look back.
