"Excuse me?" I jerked my head away from the book I was reading. "Are you Christina? The patient has been asking for you."
I nodded slowly as tears flooded my eyes. He's been asking for me?
Covering my mouth to stifle my sobs, I entered the room and walked up to Ethan. He was watching me with a small smile on his face, and grabbed my hand. I held his tightly.
"My Teeny Tina is here." I laughed, despite the tears that were flowing down my cheeks. "And so is my Bubble Boy."
I sat down on the stiff wooden chair next to the bed Ethan was on and wiped my eyes.
"Tell me." He suddenly said, watching me with a sad expression. "Tell me why you're so distant and unhappy all the time," He squeezed my hand. "I know something happened, I can see it in your eyes."
I inhaled sharply and my eyes widened. "I've never told anyone before." I whispered softly.
"But you can tell me." He whispered back.
"I had a boyfriend named James."
I swear Ethan's eyes hardened at the word 'boyfriend'.
"He was so loving, care-free, and kind. I trusted him with everything-all my secrets were kept with him." I took a deep breath.
"One day, we were talking in my room. Laughing, teasing, poking, tickling. It was on my dad's birthday."
I felt tears threatening to spill.
"He suddenly stopped tickling me, and pushed me onto my bed. I was so scared. He took out a knife from his pocket and held it at my stomach..."
~FLASHBACK~
"Where's your dad?" His voice was fierce.
"James, what are you doing?" My eyes flitted toward the knife.
"WHERE'S YOUR DAD?!"
"He-he's downstairs, watching football. Why?"
James left my room without an answer and I trudged behind him, worried.
"James!"
"Go. Go now!"
I scratched my head, confused. "Okay."
Frowning, I walked back to my room and plopped onto my bed. And then I heard a gunshot.
I sprinted downstairs in panic, and saw my dead father on the floor. And then everything went black.
~PRESENT~
"Christina..." Ethan's voice was barely above a whisper. He pulled me towards him into a hug and I sobbed into his shirt. His hands rubbed circles at the small of my back.
"It's okay...it's okay..."
I pulled away and held his face with my hands and eyed him, frowning.
"I'm so confused..."
"About what?"
"Nothing...nothing."
I looked at his face, smiling. "So how are you feeling?"
"Peachy."
I put my face back on his chest, listening to his heartbeat.
Bud-um, Bud-um, Bud-um
"Are you mad at me?" I asked in a muffled voice.
"I could never be mad at you, Christina."
Bud-um, Bud-um, Bud-um
I closed my eyes, listening to the comforting beat of his heart.
"Christina?"
"Yes?" My heart leaped, anticipating some kind of declaration.
"I think you need to go now, the doctor will be here soon."
My heart sunk and I rose to my feet.
Ethan lay there, expressionless.
"Bye, Teeny Tina."
"Bye, Bubble Boy."
Damn, I think I'm falling for Ethan Myers.
