Chapter 12

I couldn't stop thinking about what just happened.

Damn, I'm screwed...

The click-clack of heels echoed across the hall and a pretty brunette girl approached me with a smile.

She held out her hand. "The name's Britney," I shook her cold hand firmly. "Christina."

Britney's expression changed to a thoughtful, calculating look and she glanced at me, a slight frown on her face.

"Is Ethan in here?" She jutted a manicured finger toward the door.

My smile faded. Who is this girl?

"Yes..." I drawled uneasily and stared at her suspiciously. "How do you know him?"

She waved her hand dismissively. "Oh he's my boyfriend."

My eyes hardened and my gaze became cold.

"Oh."

She smiled at me knowingly. "You like him, don't you?"

I almost had a heart attack right there. "What?"

Her icy blue eyes watched me carefully. "Don't worry hun, I'm about to break up with him."

I couldn't help but sighing in relief and I looked up at her gratefully. She simply smiled and walked in Ethan's hospital room.

Okay, I spied on them.

Britney walked to the side of his bed and sat down onto the wooden chair I had been sitting on earlier. Ethan was awake, and he was smiling at her in a way that made my stomach twist in anger and jealousy.

"So...Ethan."

He grinned up at her. "Hey Britney, I really missed you." And then he grabbed the hem if her frilly top and pulled her into a kiss which made me want to cry.

Britney pulled away rather reluctantly and whispered hoarsely, "Sweetie," My hands clenched." I was thinking...and I think...this relationship has to end."

A look of hurt and confusion flashed across Ethan's face.

"W-why?"

God, I've never heard him stutter like that and it was so freaking adorable it made me want to hug him. I bit my lip and kept listening.

"It's just...I don't have anymore feelings for you, and...I just don't want this any longer. We can stay friends, but that's it."

Ethan nodded understandingly and grinned. "I actually was going to break up with you too."

She pursed her lips. "Then why were you all sad just now-"

"I thought you were testing me or something."

"Oh."

"And yeah...I like someone else."

"Who?" Ethan's eyes suddenly flitted towards the door, and I ducked.

I heard muffled voices and a chuckle.

"Uh huh. She seems perfect for you."

Sadness washed over me as I realized, he's too good for me. I could never be with him. He likes someone else. I walked back to the bench and sat down, holding my head with my hands.

Why did I get into this mess?

------

"Ma'm, the patient doesn't have transportation so I believe you must drop him off."

I nodded, and grimaced at the thought of how awkward it would be.  I trudged reluctantly into the room and snapped at Ethan to follow me.

"Why the grouchy mood?"

"Shut up, I hate you."

I wish I did.

Ethan stayed quiet and got into the car, pouting.

"I wanna drive!"

"No."

"Please?" He pleaded me with the most adorable look on his face, that I melted.

I grudgingly got out of the driver's seat and let him in.

And then he turned the radio on.

I was riding shotgun, with my hair undone, in the front seat of his car,

"Sing and act along!" Ethan hissed and I sang.

"He gotta a one-hand feel on the steering wheel, the other on my he-eart."

And then Ethan rested his hand on my heart and I felt my stomach do flips at his touch. God, I think I'm going to faint. Staring at him with big eyes, I kept singing.

"I look around, turn the radio down, he says,"

"Baby is something wrong?" Ethan asks.

Smiling, I sang louder. "I say nothin, I was just thinkin, how we don't have a so-ong. And he says,"

"Our song is the slamming screen door, sneaking out late tappin on your window-When your on the phone you talk real slow, cause' it's late and your momma don't know-Our song is the way you laugh, our first date, man I didn't kiss her and I should have-"

Oh.

My.

Gosh.

He is an amazing singer.

"And when I got home, fore' I said amen, askin God if he...could play it agai-in-ai-n." I sang awkardly, but luckily it didn't come out that bad.

And then after that he just started humming because he didn't know the lyrics, or he felt uncomfortable singing it. Ethan's hand stayed on my heart though, even after the song was over.

I think I'm gonna die!

Soon we were in front of Ethan's house.

"Ethan?" I hated how vulnerable my voice sounded.

"Yes?"

"I- I think..."

He turned to face me. "What?" His voice was soft and gentle, and it made me want to kiss him. His brilliant electric blue eyes watched me expectantly.

"I like..."

Ethan's shoulders tensed and his eyed widened a teeny bit. "Yes?"

"Lollipops!" I grinned.

He relaxed and smirked.  "I do too..."

Ethan licked his lips. "Why don't you come inside and meet my mom?"

I agreed and we walked to the door. Pressing my finger against the doorbell button, I glanced toward Ethan and he was...smiling in amusement.

Gosh, people are smiling a lot today.

The door swung open and a pretty woman that looked like she was in her late 30s beamed at me.

"Hi! I'm Ellen, what's your name, sweetheart?"

Her enthusiasm was extremely contagious- I grinned and held out my hand. "Nice to meet you, Mrs.Myers, my name is Christina-"

"No it's Teeny Tina!"

I shoved him aside. "Aw,shut up, Bubble Boy."

Ellen smiled at us and mumbled something under her breath that I heard.

"Absolutely perfect for each other."

Pfft, I wish.
