Chapter 24

Seth’s P.O.V

I sat in the ambulance, watching some people work over Hayley. I could hear an irregular beeping which matched her heartbeat. They placed a mask over her mouth and cut her clothes off so she was in her underwear. I never realized how bad the wound was until they stripped the clothes off of her. It was deep and I could see the many punctured tissues in her body. They bandaged her head up, placing lots of gauze to stop the bleeding.

The men poured some strong smelling, brown liquid onto her side wound and bandaged that up also. And then I heard a constant beep and the ambulance went frantic. She had died. They pulled out some machine with two hand sized objects. I heard an ascending buzz and they held the objects to her bare chest. There was a zap and Hayley’s body jumped. The constant beep was back again.

“Recharging…” the man said placing the objects onto her chest.

It buzzed again and Hayley’s body jumped. It happened a few times and the whole time I was holding my breath. My heart had almost stopped beating in fear of losing her. I don’t know what I would do without her. My life would end and I would remain a zombie until I die. My life would never be complete without her. And now that I know something so special about her, I don’t want to lose her. She meant so much to me and everyone else. She was our leader and my mate. I love her.

And then I heard the beeping. It was now edged into the very corners of my mind. She was alive, and I was alive. I exhaled deeply putting a hand on my heart. I saw them put away the equipment and then they stuck a needle into the top of her hand. The needle was connected to a thin tube that was connected to a bag filled with a clear liquid that dripped into the tube.

(A.N. remember they don’t know stuff like this because they are so cut off from the world. They have never heard of a drip or a defibrillator. And they couldn’t read of it because they can’t read. So I hope that gives you some insight to what he was thinking.)

Everything was so confusing to me. Everything they did was a mystery. But I knew they were well trained so I let them do their job. They were helping Hayley, so I don’t care what they do just as long as she stays alive. They placed a red thick blanket over her body and tucked it around her body.

The ambulance came to a halt and the doors opened almost automatically by a few men in the same uniform. They wore a crest which I thought must have been the hospitals. One of the men held the dripping liquid high in the air while they moved. They pulled the trolley Hayley was on out of the vehicle and rolled inside of the tall white building. . Already I could smell chemicals, and they burnt my nose.

But I ignored it and followed beside the trolley. They were moving fast, talking absolute gibberish to other employees. A lady wearing a white coat with a funny looking instrument around her neck started jogging beside the trolley checking the pulse on Hayley and barking orders to the others. It must have been the doctor.

Hayley was wheeled into a private room that was surrounded with ready machines. The employees and doctor stood beside Hayley and lifted her body onto the awaiting bed. The pulled off the blanket and the doctor immediately went to work. She didn’t gasp or looked shocked or anything but I think she has seen worse than what is lying out in front of her. The man clipped the drip onto a pole so he didn’t have to hold it anymore.
