Party Like It's Your Birthday

Kayla couldn't believe the success Brayden's party had turned out to be. Everyone on the guest list had shown up, and the party was fun for all ages. There was face painting, bounce houses, popcorn and cotton candy, carnival games, arts and crafts, a food bar, and who could forget, the animals. Brayden sat under their special tent in his mom's lap with a king crown on his head. He came dressed as a circus ringleader. Kayla had gotten Preston to match she and their son after hours of persuasion, but he wanted to make both his son and his lady happy, so he did it. The press ate it up. Preston waved as he walked out, holding Brayden's hand as they made their appearance.

Brayden and his friends bounced from activity to activity with the help of their parents, and he was having the best time. Now, of course, Kayla was struggling with him to eat. He wanted to go play again, but he wasn't going to until he ate. Kayla finally cooed him and got him to calm down, feeding him a small portion of baked chicken that he loved. He all but bit her finger off, unstoppable just like his father. Eventually, Brayden was allowed to go play again, and Preston and Kayla trotted with him happily to the Ferris Wheel. The family climbed on, riding as Brayden clapped happily.

Around two hours in, twenty minutes before they cut the cake, a message popped up on Kayla's phone as she colored next to her son. She furrowed her eyes, seeing it was a message from the security on call.

There's a woman claiming to be Brayden's mom. She needs to see you.

Kayla's heart pounded against her chest as she looked down at her baby boy as he sat in her lap. She didn't want to leave him alone, and she assumed that the woman was someone disguised to get information for the press. With a sigh, Kayla stood with Brayden and walked toward the entrance. When she was a few feet away, she stopped and gawked at the woman who seemed to be waiting impatiently. Preston was right: she did look like Kayla... a lot.

"Hi, I'm Kayla," she said very lowly as she approached the woman.

"Wow, y-you're Kayla, I'm Alexandria," she whispered back. "We do look alike."

"I was going to say the same thing, nice to meet you," Kayla said, shaking the woman's hand with Brayden in her arms.

"You, too."

"I don't want to... offend you, but you don't look-"

"Yeah, I'm high functioning. I'm two days clean, so there's that," she smiled softly, dropping Kayla's hand. The woman was dressed in a pants suit, hair tied back, and she had a cell phone in her hand. She was around two years older than Kayla and looked very business-oriented.

"This is... Brayden. He looks just like his dad, but I'm willing to bet that he wants to meet you," Kayla smiled gently.

"Oh, that's okay. I don't want..."

"Are you sure? If Preston shows up any time soon, he'd flip out. This could be your only opportunity," Kayla said as Alexandria looked between her son and the woman who was now taking care of him.

"Yeah, okay," she sighed as Kayla carefully set Brayden in her arms.

"Mommy," Brayden whined as he locked eyes with Kayla.
