Happy Halloween

Kayla groaned as she placed a carved pumpkin into a window in her living room. It was Halloween, one of her favorite holidays, but she just couldn't get into a good mood. She was wearing sweatpants and a sweater, though it wasn't necessarily chilly outside, and she couldn't seem to get comfortable even in that. Everything felt off about her and it was irritating. Nevertheless, she had to continue decorating before it was time to change into her outfit and begin the party. She continued setting up all by herself, as she preferred to be, for the event she and her husband had planned. Though it was Halloween, it was to be the most glamorous Halloween party yet as the theme was Black Tie Jack-O-Lantern. It was a fundraiser for the recreational center that was set to open up in January, just three short months away. Preston had finished all the necessary paperwork, gathered the finances, and was all set. His dream was coming true.

Just as she thought of Preston, she could hear footsteps coming down the stairs. She looked up and the mere sight of her husband made her stomach curl. She wasn't sure what it was, but the last few days she had been incredibly distant and slightly rude to him. They had been married for two months, and those two months were the happiest of her life, until a few days prior. She couldn't help but curl her lip at him, push him away when he tried to kiss or hug her, or squirm away when he wanted to hold her at night. He honestly had not done anything besides be the best husband in the entire world, but here she was disturbed by his simply being there, as if it wasn't his fundraiser.

"Hi, baby," Preston smiled widely, attempting to hold her from behind but she moved away.

"Hello," she sighed in response.

Preston simply watched her for a few moments, trying to figure out what he had done in the last few days to make her upset. One day she was calling him to come home from work so she could cuddle, and the next day she was treating him like the leftovers in the fridge. It didn't make sense.

"Do you want help decorating? I tried earlier, but—"

"No. I'm fine," she shrugged.

"Uhm... There's one pumpkin up and it starts in two hours, plus you still have to get dressed," he mentioned, his voice low as to not upset her.

"I... Fine, Preston," she sighed as he picked up a pack of wall decorations and got to work.

"You know, I was thinking about going out on a date with someone tomorrow. Would you like to come?" Preston asked as she started hanging the fake spiderwebs.

"Where?" She asked as he scoffed.

"So where we go determines if you accept or not?"

"I-I..."

"Did I do something to make you mad?" He asked, putting down his decorations and walking toward her.

"Pres, it's nothing."

"No, stop working," he said, taking the spiderwebs out of her hand. "What the hell is going on? You've been distant and mean the last couple days. We didn't fight, I didn't go and do anything. What happened? We've been nothing but happy since we got married and we hardly argue. So what happened to make my wife hate me?"
