Most of the townspeople are aware of the presence of the dead residents. Those that are aware pretend not to notice, despite their fear and unease, so they don't offend or anger the spirits. This is also the reason that nobody from outside the town knows of the town's curse; so that the dead's peace is not disturbed and they continue to keep to themselves instead of harming townspeople. Visitors to the town that recognise people either assume they are lookalikes or are treated as though they are going crazy.
