Chapter 1 – Heaven
Chase had spent his days training hard, sharpening his skills for the battles he knew were inevitable. It had been years since he last saw Sarah, his human charge, and today he decided to wrap up his lesson early and return to his family. As he walked home, he caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. He looked stronger, older. For a moment, he marveled at his own reflection. Angels weren't supposed to change much over time, yet he felt different, as if he were growing.
"Chase!" called a warm voice. His mother, Kim, pulled him into a hug.
"Hey, Mom," he said, returning her embrace. "How are you?"
"I'm well," she replied with a gentle smile. "And how was your lesson today?"
"Not too bad," Chase shrugged. "Have you seen Jackson?"
"He's over by the pond, near the Corey Cloud," Kim replied.
"Thanks. I'll go find him," Chase said, giving his mother one last smile before heading off.
Chase found Jackson sitting under a grand, silver tree, gazing out over the shimmering pond.
"Chase," Jackson greeted, his face somber.
"You called for me?" Chase asked, sensing an unusual urgency.
Jackson nodded. "Yes, Chase. I think... it's time for you to go back to Sarah."
Chase's eyes widened. "Why? Is she in danger?"
"I'm not sure," Jackson admitted, his voice heavy. "But a war is coming, and Heaven may soon be under siege by demons. We don't know exactly when, but it's inevitable. I'd like you to go down to Earth and protect your human."
Chase clenched his fists. "We're going to battle... and you spoke to God about this?"
Jackson sighed. "Yes, but as always, His responses are... subtle. He hasn't given me direct answers. However, a human body has been prepared for you. It's ready on Earth, created specifically for this purpose, just as you were a long time ago."
Chase took a deep breath, nodding as he tried to process the information. "Alright. I'll leave tomorrow."
"Good. Remember everything you've been taught," Jackson said, giving him a resolute nod before flying off.
Chase stood there, looking into the distance. "I always do," he whispered, turning back toward his home.
Back at his family's cloud home, Chase found his father, Adam, gazing out at the golden expanse of Heaven.
"Hey, Dad," Chase greeted, joining him.
Adam glanced at his son, noting the serious expression on his face. "Son, is something bothering you?"
Chase exhaled, a mix of anticipation and worry flickering in his eyes. "Yes. I have to go back to Sarah. Heaven may be under attack by demons soon, and Jackson wants me to protect her."
Adam's brow furrowed. "Are you sure? And... is Sarah in any immediate danger?"
"Not yet, but I need to be by her side again. I'll leave tomorrow."
Kim, who had been listening nearby, smiled softly. "I think it's lovely that you'll be able to see Sarah again. Be gentle with her."
Chase nodded. "I will, Mom," he promised, then made his way to his room to prepare for the journey ahead.
Chase sat in his room, his mind racing with thoughts of Sarah and the impending war. Restless, he decided to go for a jog, hoping the exercise would calm him. He ran five miles, weaving between clouds and using his wings to glide along the sparkling paths. Eventually, he paused beneath a familiar tree, near a small floating cloud. This was the spot where he had first heard Sarah's voice, all those years ago, as she prayed for a guardian angel. The memory warmed his heart.
It had been six years since he last saw her, and he couldn't help but wonder if she would remember him. He hoped she would. As he made his way back to his cloud home, the entire realm seemed to reflect his emotions—bright, serene, and filled with a low hum of song as the other angels sang in harmony.
That night, as he prepared to rest, his mother poked her head in. "Chase, honey, you should go to bed early tonight. You wouldn't want to be cranky when you see Sarah tomorrow."
Chase laughed softly. "Goodnight, Mom," he said as he lay down, listening to the nightly horns echo across Heaven and even down to Earth. A contented smile spread across his face as he drifted to sleep, already dreaming of the reunion to come.
