Chapter 6 – John's Angel
Chase parked the car along the curb in front of the house. Jackson helped Sarah out, and together they all walked up to the front door. Inside, they found John lounging in his chair, intently watching a soccer match on TV. He glanced up as they entered, his gaze narrowing as he noticed the unfamiliar figure behind Chase.
"How was the trip?" John asked, his eyes shifting suspiciously toward Jackson.
"It was fine... until two demons tried to kill me," Sarah said, a hint of annoyance in her voice. "But Chase and his brother took care of them."
John's eyes widened as he looked Sarah over for injuries. "Are you hurt?"
"No, I ran straight to the car when Chase told me to," she replied, smiling reassuringly.
"Thank you, Chase," John said, nodding with relief before turning back to the stranger. "And you... who are you?"
Jackson stepped forward, a smirk on his face. "It's me, John—Jackson."
John's face lit up in recognition. "Jack!" he exclaimed, pulling Jackson into a hug. "It's been too long. How have you been?"
Jackson chuckled. "I'm doing well—especially now that I'm here with Chase. And you, John? You're looking a bit thinner."
John laughed, patting his stomach. "That's thanks to all the fire training."
"Hey, what's for dinner?" Sarah called out, interrupting as she came into the room.
John thought for a moment. "How about pizza?"
"Sounds good!" Sarah said, grabbing her phone and dialing the local pizza place.
Meanwhile, John settled back into his chair, turning to Jackson. "So, Jack... what've you been up to since you left?"
Jackson shrugged, stretching out on the couch. "Oh, the usual angel stuff—training, guiding Chase, keeping Heaven in check. And now I'm back here."
John grinned, glancing over at Chase. "You did a good job teaching him. I think he might be better than you now, Jack."
Jackson raised an eyebrow, looking amused. "Oh, really? And why's that?"
John chuckled. "Well, he actually came back to visit us."
Jackson's face fell slightly, but he managed a smile. "I wanted to, but I couldn't. God made it clear I wasn't allowed to return."
Sarah peeked out from the kitchen. "Why not?"
Jackson hesitated. "Let's just say it was God's orders. My presence was needed elsewhere."
John waved a hand dismissively, smiling warmly. "Excuses, excuses. I'm just glad you're both here now."
Chase and Jackson exchanged smirks, then flopped onto the couch side-by-side, feeling like brothers as they settled into the comfortable chaos of John and Sarah's home.
Later, as they relaxed, Sarah looked over at her father with curious eyes. "Alright, Dad, spill it. How did you and Jack meet?"
John leaned back, a nostalgic smile tugging at his lips. "It was when I was sixteen. I was walking home from school, and Jack pulled me into an alley."
"Wait, so you just... pulled him into an alley?" Sarah asked, raising an eyebrow at Jackson.
Jackson laughed. "It wasn't as bad as it sounds. I pulled him aside because he was in danger."
"Danger?" Sarah repeated, her interest piqued.
John nodded. "There was a demon named Sitel—vicious, relentless. He came after me because of a prophecy about you, Sarah."
Sarah's eyes went wide. "So you knew even before Mom did that I was going to... well, be born?"
John chuckled, glancing at Jackson with a hint of gratitude. "Yeah, it was strange. But Jack saved me that day. Sitel would have killed me if it weren't for him."
Sarah looked at Jackson with newfound respect. "Well, thanks for saving my dad."
Jackson gave her a small bow. "It was my honor."
Chase blinked, a thought suddenly dawning on him. "Wait... the demon Sitel—the one you told me stories about? You were the one who killed him?"
Jackson gave him a sideways grin, slinging an arm around his shoulder. "Yep. Took care of him right there in that alley."
Sarah watched the two, a small smile forming. "Alright, break it up, you two."
Jackson gave Chase a playful shove as he went to answer the door, where the pizza delivery guy was standing, looking a bit startled as if he hadn't expected them to know he was there. Chase grabbed the pizzas and set them on the table.
"Pizza's here!" he called out as Sarah paid the delivery guy and closed the door.
The family gathered around the table, helping themselves to slices as they shared stories and laughter. John listened intently as Chase and Jackson recounted the fight with the demon hunters, their voices rising and falling in excitement.
As they ate, the brothers settled in, watching the game with John. Chase couldn't help but smile at the easy comfort he felt in their presence. For the first time in a long time, everything felt like it was right where it should be.
