Chapter 14 – Searching for Chase
Sarah and John walked along the side of the road, the Transom device clutched in John's hand as it softly beeped, tracking the angels' last location.
"So, how will we know when we're close?" Sarah asked, glancing around nervously.
John glanced down at the device. "When we're nearby, the screen will light up brighter and the sound will get stronger."
Sarah nodded, twisting a strand of her hair between her fingers. She couldn't shake the worry tightening in her chest.
John glanced over at her, noticing her tense expression. "Alright, what's bothering you, Sarah? Is it college? Demons? Chase? Heaven?"
Sarah sighed. "It's... all of it, honestly. My college courses are overwhelming, and it's been hard to keep up. And then Chase coming back has just... added to everything. I thought it'd be easier with him around, but it's like everything is getting more intense."
John nodded thoughtfully as he adjusted the buttons on the Transom. "You know, you could always switch classes to make things a bit easier. I remember college wasn't exactly a walk in the park."
Sarah smiled slightly. "I tried, but every time I go, they're closed or the servers are down, or it's so packed I can't get in."
John gave her a reassuring smile. "Go on a Saturday. Or set an appointment. And in the meantime, I'll help you manage the stress. College is tough, but you'll get through it."
"Thanks, Dad," Sarah replied, a bit of relief in her voice. "I guess I just hate feeling out of control. I get how you must feel sometimes, running into burning buildings and facing danger every day."
John chuckled. "Yeah, but I always get through it, no matter what I face. You're tougher than you think, Sarah."
They paused at a bench in front of an old school building, and John motioned for her to sit beside him. "So, what else is on your mind?"
Sarah sighed, looking down at her hands. "Chase is back to protect me, and I'm grateful, but... I feel helpless, like I did when I was a kid. I want to help him."
John gave her a warm smile. "Well, that's what we're doing, isn't it? Coming after him, even if it's dangerous, is helping him. He needs you just as much as you need him."
Sarah managed a small smile. "You're right. But when we get there, what exactly are we going to do?"
John lifted the Transom, showing her the display. "See these two red dots? That means the demons are still in the area. Once they're gone, the dots will turn blue, meaning Chase and Jackson have defeated them. We'll go in as soon as it's safe."
Sarah glanced at him, surprised. "You've been to this warehouse before?"
John nodded, a hint of nostalgia in his eyes. "Yeah. The last time I was under attack, Jackson hid me here. It's as safe as places get when angels and demons are involved."
They continued walking, passing a man with strangely bright white eyes, though he quickly looked away. Sarah shivered, feeling a strange chill, but kept walking.
Three or four blocks later, they arrived at the warehouse. It loomed dark and foreboding, the air around it charged with tension. Sarah clung to John, trying to steady her nerves as they stood outside, listening to the distant sounds of fighting coming from within.
Swords clashed, and a fierce shout echoed out, followed by a blood-curdling scream. Then, silence.
Sarah held her breath, fearing the worst. But then John nudged her gently, pointing to the Transom device. The two red dots had disappeared, replaced by two steady blue lights.
A huge smile broke across Sarah's face, and she bolted toward the door, throwing it open.
"Chase!" she cried, rushing inside and wrapping him in a tight hug.
"Sarah?" Chase's voice was surprised, but he hugged her back. "What are you doing here?"
"To rescue you, of course!" she replied, pulling back with a proud smile.
Chase shook his head, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "And just how were you planning to pull that off?"
Before she could respond, a dark, cold voice echoed through the warehouse. "Yes, Sarah... just how do you plan to do that?"
A powerful force threw Sarah backward, slamming her into the wall. She looked up in time to see Chase's eyes go wide as he dropped to the floor, paralyzed.
"No!" she screamed, struggling against the invisible grip holding her in place.
The shadows shifted, and three demons emerged—Gero, Vermin, and Heru—all with twisted smiles on their faces. Heru walked forward, reaching out and grabbing Chase by the neck, lifting him effortlessly.
"Well, look at this," Heru sneered, tightening his grip on Chase's throat. "I have the infamous Chase right where I want him."
Chase gritted his teeth, his vision blurring as he fought to keep his focus. But the pain in Heru's grasp was overwhelming.
"Let him go!" Sarah cried, struggling to break free, but her limbs felt heavy, as though weighed down by an unseen force.
Heru glanced at her with a wicked grin. "Oh, don't worry, Sarah. You'll have a part in this too."
With a snap of his fingers, Heru summoned shadows that twisted and wrapped around Sarah, binding her tightly. Another demon, Gero, stepped forward, grinning as he began chanting in a dark, ancient tongue. "Parka ne cue me!" he whispered, and Chase's body stiffened further, unable to move, his strength rapidly draining.
"Chase!" Sarah screamed, her voice echoing in the dark as she struggled against her bindings, helpless to stop the demons from dragging Chase and her into their trap.
As darkness closed in around them, Chase's vision faded, Sarah's voice the last thing he heard before he slipped into unconsciousness.
