Chapter 20 – The Goodbye (Again)
Three weeks had passed since the battle in Heaven, and Sarah had settled back into her life. With new classes lined up, she'd been working hard, feeling a renewed focus and motivation. Today, she was at the kitchen table, pouring over her notes on human anatomy, when a familiar knock at the kitchen doorframe made her look up.
There, leaning casually with a warm smile, was Chase.
"Hey, Sarah," he said, his eyes soft with a mixture of pride and sadness. "How are you doing?"
"Pretty good," she replied, returning his smile. "Just studying for a test tomorrow."
"Don't worry," Chase reassured her, "you're going to do great." He hesitated, glancing toward the front door just as it opened. John walked in, his face lighting up as he saw Chase.
"Hey, son!" John clapped Chase on the back, grabbing a cold drink from the fridge. "What brings you here?"
Chase took a deep breath. "I... I have to say goodbye again."
Sarah's face fell, her eyes searching his. "Again? How long will you be gone this time?"
Chase offered a small smile, though his gaze was serious. "I don't know. It could be a while. But I'm keeping my promise," he added, holding up his pinky.
Sarah smiled softly, linking her pinky with his. "If we meet again, tell me, 'I met my mother in Heaven.' That'll help me remember."
"Deal," Chase said, pulling her into a hug.
As they pulled apart, Chase took off his necklace, pressing it into her hands, along with a small light-blue sword, shimmering faintly with Heaven's light.
"Thank you, Chase," Sarah whispered, clutching the gifts tightly.
"You're welcome. And you'll need this, too," Chase said, pulling out a familiar set of keys and handing them to John.
John chuckled, looking down at the Impala's keys in his palm. "Don't worry, I'll drive it responsibly."
Chase laughed. "I'm counting on it."
Then John wrapped him in a hug. "Take care of yourself up there, Chase. And know we're always here if you need us."
Chase nodded, hugging him back. "Same goes for you two. Keep each other safe."
"Goodbye, Chase," Sarah said softly, her eyes misting. "We'll be here when you come back."
"Goodbye, Sarah. Goodbye, John." With one last look, Chase stepped back and vanished in a shimmer of light.
Chase reappeared in the abandoned warehouse, slipping out of his human vessel. The body he'd used lay empty on the floor, and Chase leaned over, whispering softly, "You won't remember a thing," as he wiped away any memory of the battle and placed a few cuts and bruises on the vessel to make the transition look natural.
In the distance, he heard the sound of police sirens. Jackson had arranged everything, and as the cops pulled up outside, Chase flashed back to Heaven, leaving the vessel to be discovered.
Arriving in Heaven, Chase felt a wave of warmth as he returned home. His family was there waiting for him—his mother, father, and Jackson. They gathered around him, celebrating not only his return but the victory they had all won together. Laughter and joy filled the air as they talked about the war, the restoration of Heaven, and the Lord's return.
The burdens of the battle slowly slipped away as they shared stories and cherished their triumph. Eventually, exhaustion pulled at him, and as Chase lay down to rest, he closed his eyes, feeling a deep sense of peace. Heaven was safe, his family was near, and Sarah and John were back home. Darkness filled his vision as sleep took over, comforting him with the thought that one day, he would return.
