Chapter 11 – The Argument
Chase sat outside on the porch, eyes closed as he communicated silently with his father in Heaven. They were strategizing, discussing the army they were training and the extra angels they'd need if the upcoming battle was to be successful. Chase urged his father to continue leading the training efforts until everything was ready.
"Chase!"
He opened his eyes, surprised to find Sarah standing in front of him, arms crossed and an irritated look in her eyes.
"What's wrong?" he asked, still distracted by his thoughts.
Sarah's expression darkened. "What do you think?"
Chase furrowed his brows, confused. "Think about what?"
"My dad's lecture, that's what!" she snapped. "How he's practically locking me up just because he's scared something might happen!"
Chase sighed, nodding slowly. "I get it, Sarah. You do need more freedom. But he's right about not going out right now. If something happened to you..." he hesitated, "you'd be putting yourself at risk, and that's not something we can afford."
Sarah's frustration bubbled over. "So you agree with him!" she yelled.
"Sarah, just listen—"
"No! I don't want to listen!" she shouted, cutting him off. "You and my dad keep acting like I'm some fragile little kid. I know what's out there. I know demons are after me! But that doesn't mean I have to be locked up like a prisoner!"
Chase's face grew serious, his tone low. "You know what happened to me when I was close to your age? I was killed. Not by a demon, but by my dad's ex-wife. I barely even got a chance to live a full life."
Sarah glared at him, hurt and frustration filling her eyes. "I don't give a damn what happened to you, Chase! You can't tell me what to do anymore!" She spun around, storming back inside and slamming the door behind her.
As Chase sat in stunned silence, he heard a familiar voice behind him. "You okay, son?"
Chase looked over to see John coming out of the garage. He forced a small smile. "Yeah, I'll be fine. She just... needs some time to cool down."
John nodded, watching the door. "She's young, and this is all a lot to handle. Give her some space."
"I will," Chase replied, taking a deep breath to steady himself.
Just then, Jackson appeared out of thin air, his expression tense. "Chase, we've got another job."
"What is it?" Chase asked, standing up.
"Two more demons are targeting Sarah. We need to intercept them," Jackson said.
Chase nodded. "Alright. We'll be back," he told John before vanishing with Jackson.
John watched them disappear, his own worry creeping in. He took a deep breath before stepping back inside the house, calling out, "Sarah? Where are you?"
"In the kitchen," Sarah's voice answered, sounding defeated.
John walked in, noticing her slumped posture as she fiddled with the edge of her sleeve. "What's wrong, honey?"
Sarah sighed, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "I want freedom, Dad. I want to go out without worrying about demons attacking me every second. But it's like I can't even leave the house anymore."
John's face softened as he put a hand on her shoulder. "This won't last forever, Sarah. Once all of this is over, you'll have your freedom."
"But when?" she asked, frustration flashing in her eyes again. "When can I actually live my life?"
John hesitated. "When Chase and Jackson take down these demons that are after you."
A defiant glint sparked in her eyes. "Then I'm going after Chase," she said, standing up.
John immediately shook his head. "No, you're not."
"Why not?"
"Because you're not going without me," he replied, a determined look on his face.
Sarah's frown slowly turned into a smile. "Alright, Dad. Do you know where they went?"
John nodded, rushing to his room. He returned a moment later with a small circular device, covered in buttons and with a large screen at the center.
Sarah stared at it, intrigued. "What's that?"
"It's a Transom device," John explained, pressing a few buttons. "It helps track angels. This should lead us straight to Chase and Jackson."
As he typed in the names, a faint sound pulsed through the device as it scanned. After a few seconds, a bright light appeared on the screen, displaying the location of the two angels.
"Got it," John said, grabbing his keys. Sarah grabbed her jacket, and together they headed out the door, following the signal to find Chase and Jackson.
