Chapter 17 – War, Part 2
Chase charged into the heart of battle, leaving Sarah and John in the care of a lady guardian angel who promised to keep them safe. His focus narrowed as he cut through the chaos, slicing the head off one demon after another. Beside him, other angels fought fiercely, and the white dragon soared above, unleashing torrents of fire on demon dogs and foot soldiers alike, turning whole clusters of the enemy to ash.
He spotted Jackson fighting atop a demon dog, using a chant—"De cent fret hen!"—to bend the beast to his will. The dog, now under Jackson's control, barreled through the demon ranks, trampling enemies and snapping up demons in its jaws before tossing them aside. With a surge of confidence, Chase grabbed a nearby demon, hurling it toward the white dragon, which promptly tore it apart in mid-air.
Across the field, Chase saw Adam struggling against two demons. Without hesitating, Chase uttered an ice spell, "Fro je vie arc!" Ice enveloped the demons, freezing them solid, and with one swift strike, Chase shattered them into glittering shards.
"You alright, Dad?" Chase called out.
Adam nodded, giving a quick thumbs-up. "I'm fine!" he replied, kicking another demon and dispatching it with his sword. "Watch out, son!"
Chase ducked as another demon lunged at him. He swiftly countered, breaking the demon's neck and watching it dissolve into dark smoke. The battlefield was filled with the clang of metal, the roar of dragons, and the blinding flashes of angelic spells.
"More demons are coming through the gates!" Jay yelled, signaling for reinforcements.
"Savior, go!" Chase commanded, and the white dragon responded, unleashing a massive ball of fire that collided with a rock from Heaven's cloud walls, turning into a fiery meteor that crashed into the demon ranks, scattering them.
Above, a deafening roar split the sky. A two-headed black dragon charged toward the white dragon, its massive wings sending shockwaves through the clouds. The two dragons collided mid-air, spiraling through the heavens as they snapped and clawed at each other, their fiery breath illuminating the battle below. Eventually, they crashed against Heaven's gate, each creature desperately trying to overpower the other.
Suddenly, fire arrows shot from the demon ranks, darkening the sky as they rained down on the angelic forces. Some angels dissolved instantly upon impact, while others managed to shield themselves with their swords or deflect the flames. In retaliation, the angels launched volleys of blue fire and massive stones, the rocks bouncing and shattering across Heaven's clouds, striking the demons hard.
Chase spotted a demon dog charging him, its massive jaws snapping viciously. Before he could react, the beast leaped, pinning him down, its teeth gnashing dangerously close to his face. With a quick spell—"Tar go zed qi!"—Chase summoned his sword back to his hand just as the dog lunged again. He drove the blade into its mouth, piercing its skull and killing it instantly.
Rolling the beast's body off of him, Chase stood up, only to find himself face-to-face with Zane, Trevor's brother, wielding a dark red sword that seemed to pulse with hate.
"Finally, Chase," Zane sneered, his eyes blazing with vengeance. "Now I can avenge my brother's death!"
Chase smirked, his stance unwavering. "I've been waiting for this moment too. And as for your brother, I'm glad I killed him."
With a furious roar, Zane charged, swinging his sword down in a vicious arc. Chase sidestepped, countering with a strike that sparked as their blades clashed. He swung the hilt of his sword, catching Zane across the face, then followed up with a kick to his stomach, sending him sprawling back across the cloud.
"You think you can destroy me?" Zane yelled, standing up, his eyes glowing with rage.
"I don't think," Chase replied. "I know—just like I destroyed your brother." The two clashed again, exchanging a fierce series of blows. Zane landed a punch to Chase's gut, knocking the wind out of him, and sent him tumbling through the air.
Dazed, Chase looked around, noticing the diminishing ranks of angels. Their forces were dwindling, and more demons waited at the gate, their dark forms gathering, poised for a final assault.
"Look around you, Chase!" Zane whispered in his ear, pressing his blade close. "This will be carnage. Your angels will fall, and Heaven will belong to us!"
Rage surged through Chase, and his sword flared, turning a dark, determined blue. In a flash, Chase twisted, catching Zane's blade mid-swing and driving his own sword deep into Zane's chest.
Zane laughed through gritted teeth. "You think that can kill me?"
"No," Chase replied, his voice calm. "But my sword can." The blade glowed dark blue, charged with Chase's resolve and fury. Zane's expression changed as he realized the power within it.
Zane let out a scream as his body began to disintegrate, consumed by a brilliant blue light. In a final explosion, he was blown back into darkness, his form dissolving in a blast of energy. Chase was thrown back by the force, landing hard on the clouds as his sword returned to its normal color.
He scrambled to his feet as Adam ran up to him, a look of relief in his eyes. "We've defeated most of the demons," Adam said, breathing heavily.
"How many angels do we have left?" Chase asked, glancing around at the battered field.
"About 200," Adam replied grimly.
Just then, a deep horn blew near the gate. Chase's heart sank. Through the shattered gates of Heaven, another wave of demons poured through—reinforcements. They filled the horizon, charging forward with renewed vigor, intent on breaching the heart of Heaven.
"Get ready," Chase muttered, his grip tightening on his sword. "This isn't over."
With his father at his side, and the remaining angels gathering for what could be their final stand, Chase took a deep breath, steeling himself. Heaven's light grew brighter, shimmering one last time, as they prepared to face the darkness that threatened to consume it all.
