"Callie, come down and help me with the boxes please."
"Sure mum," I answered.
I and my mom shifted the boxes to the apartment and then sat at the dining table for a quick snack. I was busy sipping my coffee when my mom asked: "so how do you think this is gonna turn out?"
"I don't know mum, you tell me," I answered.
"Well, I hope it turns out to be good." She said.
"Yeah, me too."
"So, how do you think about starting school? You start tomorrow. You know that?"
"Yeah, now that you have brought it up I actually have something to ask. Not that I really care but don't you think that Coldwater High is a weird name for a school?"
Mom smiled, "Well honey, if you think that Coldwater high is a weird name for a school then try Beach Academy."
I nearly spat the coffee I was drinking. "What? Your school's name was Beach Academy? What kind of name is that?"
"That too when it was right in the middle of the country."
"OK, I gotta say, given a choice amongst Beach Academy which isn't anywhere near a beach and Coldwater High I'd definitely go for Coldwater High." I was smiling.
"Yeah? OK I gotta go to the office. Set up and all." She explained when I gave her a quizzical look. She kissed me goodbye and went out. I thought it was a good chance to explore the neighborhood.
I went out. Two houses on the left before the crossing and seven on the right. I was weighing my options when I heard a voice.
"Hii, are you lost? I haven't seen you around." It was a guy jogging up to me.
"Hii, I am Camille, we just shifted here yesterday. " I said.
"Oh, Camille. I am your new neighbor, I guess." He says, gesturing to the house next to ours."I'm Jacob, but I prefer Jake," He added.
"And please, call me Callie."
"Callie. Okay!"
We went around the neighborhood and made small talk. Once we discovered that I am to go to the same school he goes to he showed me the park and the way to Coldwater High. Then he told me about the school. From what I could gather it was a pretty good school and the people were friendly enough.
Jake was easy to hang out with. We grabbed lunch ate it outside my house on the benches.
"See I gotta get going but do you want me to walk you to the school tomorrow?"
I thought that it would be better than troubling mom and besides it would be nice to have one person you know when you stumble into unknown territory that too being the new girl. "Yeah, that would be nice," I answered.
After dinner, I plopped up on my bed and fell into a dreamless sleep and woke up to the sound of my alarm clock ringing.
I got out of bed and into the shower. I debated what to wear. Finally, I squeezed myself into blue jeans and a grey V-neck. I slipped into my converse and braided my hair.
I had cereal and went out and sat on the front door steps waiting for Jake. I had almost given up on him turning up when I heard his voice. "Callie, sorry for being late. I overslept." He gave me a sheepish smile.
"And I thought you were dead," I answered. I got up and started walking with him. I reached Coldwater High and started getting glances from here and there.
