Part 21: Death

I heard Yuki crying one afternoon as I got back from my shift at work. He was sitting in the living room. I approached him carefully, and sat next to him.

"What's wrong?" I placed a hand on his back.

"Oni...he just stopped breathing." He had the bunny in his hand.

I went to touch it, and confirmed it was dead. How did this happen? I felt bad for Yuki. "I'll get another one."

"No it's okay. I am fine." He wipes his eyes. "Sorry for being a crybaby about it. I'm glad you're home." He hugs me tightly.

Yuki's hugs were always the thing I looked forward to every time I got home. I hugged him back. The air in the room was stuffy, but warm.

"What do you want for dinner?" I still felt new to this whole dating a man concept. I didn't know if it would be insulting if I treated him like a girl or not. Eventually I decided I'll treat him the same as I always did.

"Not sure..." He looks at the bunny. "I think he needs a proper burial. I don't think I can maintain pets." He sighs.

"It's okay really. You have me to maintain."

He blushes, and looks away. "You are a lot to handle as it is." He smiles slightly.

"Trust me I am. I am a messy guy. Let's order takeout."

"No can we go out?" He asked. A first for him to suggest something. Yuki was definitely making progress, and that made me happy.

"Sure, but where?"

"Sushi. I really like that. I hadn't eaten it in a while."

"That's fine." I didn't want to tell Yuki I hated sushi. It tasted disgusting, and I didn't get the hype of it. Tonight will be his night.

We sat next to each other at a famous sushi bar. It was neat watching the little trays pass by us on the moving belt machine.

Yuki was amused by the scenery. It was as if I was watching a little kid. I found it quite adorable, but I would never tell him that.

"This is amazing. Thank you Takahiro." He nudges me lightly.

"No problem. I don't mind treating you. How's that job?"

"I'm starting tomorrow. I can't wait." He eats a sushi, and looks at me. "Aren't you going to eat?"

I feared he would say that. I could never down sushi because of its foul taste. I hesitantly took one in my chopsticks, and ate it in one bite without making a sour face.

"Isn't it good?" His eyes lit up.

"Perhaps."

"Do you not like sushi?"

"I do like it." I lied.

"Oh okay. I didn't want to go somewhere you didn't like."

"No it's fine." I smiled. "So what will you do at work?"

"Maybe greet customers, and make the occasional pastries."

"Good luck okay? I'm proud of you."

"Thank you." He smiles.

"It's almost Christmas. I know it's a touchy subject, but are you going to your family?"

"No."

"Why? It's that time of the year."

"They abandoned me so why should I?" He looked hurt.

"Could you tell me about them?"

"My mother was always depressed. She beats me a lot when I didn't do the right things. My father was insane, and verbally along with physically abused me when I got bad grades. I hate them both, and I know if I went back, they would lecture me." He fiddles with his thumbs. "My family isn't ideal like yours."
