"Hey Ev," I say as she runs into my arms as I wait outside her school for her.
"Arabella, is it? Can I have a quick word?" Ev's teacher steps outside.
"Ev, can you go play with your friends over there please?"
"Okay," She nods and runs off to the playground.
We sit down at the chairs in the classroom, and the teacher is first to speak up. "So, your little sister is currently in hospital?"
"She's been on and off for 2 weeks now," I state, the backward and forward to the hospital was beginning to get tiring.
"Well, Evelyn seems to be dropping out of the class ever so slowly. A lot of the time she seems lost, when was the last time she saw her parents?"
"3 days ago, she's not often allowed in the hospital. She practically lives with me,"
"Would it be possible either Taylor or Ed can just come and sit with her for a day at school. Bear in mind, it's tomorrow when we allow the parents to come in for the day for the lower grades. It might just be a lift in her confidence,"
"Okay, we'll try. I can cancel my studio time and come in if not." I sigh as Ev comes through the door, limping and crying.
"Ev, what's wrong?" I kneel down as the teacher gets a first aid kit out.
"They told me no one loves me, they pushed me over. Look," She points at her bleeding knee as we quickly fish through the first aid kit for a tissue.
"Ev, I'm gonna press on this okay? I'm not hurting you," I tell her as tears continue to roll down her face. We stop the bleeding and clean the cut before leaving and heading straight for the hospital.
Ev clings on to my hand as we walk in, straight to the children's ward, room 7. I enter to my parents gently shushing their youngest as she cries.
"Mommy!" Ev leaps into Mom's arms.
"Hey baby girl, how are you princess?" Mom sits Ev in her lap as Ed puts Maya down to focus on Ev.
"Mom, Ed- can either of you go to this parents day and Ev's school tomorrow?" I ask hopefully.
"We wouldn't miss it for the world," Mom says as she helps Ev hold Maya.
"Ed, can I borrow you?" I ask and he smiles and stands up as we wal into the corridor. "Ev's teacher says that Ev's becoming less confident in class because she doesn't see you enough."
"Okay, we'll go in tomorrow. I can drop her off everyday,"
"Ed, please leave the hospital. You are almost living here. Ev hasn't seen a family holiday for two years. Not everything is as bad as this outside. How about you come round for dinner tonight? The house will probably be a mess but you cannot carry on living like this." I say and Ed nods.
"Okay, we'll do it. We'll book a holiday later, you and Shawn can come too. We'll spend this weekend with both of them, we can take them out together."
"Thanks Ed," I reply and hug him.
"So, I'm thinking maybe somewhere like Morocco?" I laugh at Ed and we walk back in. "We are gonna go on holiday,"
"What? We can't leave Maya," Mom defends her and Maya.
"Mom, you are currently live in a hospital. Better things go on outside here, when was the last time we vacationed as a family? We are going to book it tonight when you come round for dinner. Ev even made a cake after school yesterday for desert didn't you?"
"I did! And we iced it Mommy! Please come! I want to go on a plane!" With that Ev's zooming round the room.
"I don't think I can leave like that,"
"Maya would come with us, either way it's up to you. I'm gonna take Ev back now and tidy the place a bit. You're all welcome whenever,"
The evening rolls around and Shawn gets the door, to reveal Ed. By himself, "Ed, has Mom not wanted to leave yet?" I ask and he nods.
"Daddy! Where's Mommy?" Ev goes and plays with Ed whilst Shawn lays the table and I finish the dinner. He lays a place for Mom and Maya still in case they turn up later.
"Daddy said he'd take us all on holiday! I'm excited!"
"Wow Ev, do you want to go and sit at the table?" Shawn asks her and she runs to the table.
"Thank you," Ed says as I dish up the spaghetti.
"For what?" We ask in unison.
"You've looked after Ev for two weeks. I should really pay you. I'm sorry Taylor's playing up like this,"
"Don't pay us. It's fine, it's nice to have you here;" Shawn answers as I carry the plates to the dining room. We begin to eat when I hear the doorbell go.
"One second," I get it and stood there is Mom, carrying Maya.
"Hi Mom," I break the silence and she smiles; "We've just started eating, do you want to join us?" She nods.
"Thank you for saying what you did earlier A, I'm overthinking everything. I just need to live a little,"
"Come on," We walk into the dining room and everyone cheers.
"So, are we going to the Caribbean?" Mom asks and we laugh and enjoy eating together.
Taylor's POV:
I awake the following morning to a crying Maya, who hasn't had her inhaler. I run to her room and quickly make her take it before I get Ev ready for school.
We leave on time which seems a very rare occasion and we walk into school with Ev. She suddenly becomes quiet and stops talking the second we walk into her classroom.
"Ev, baby girl, what's wrong?" I ask and she shrugs, sits silently in her chair as me and Ed look totally confused.
"Oh, it's great you've managed to get out of the hospital today. Hopefully you being around will help boost Ev's confidence;"
"Yeah, we hope so too." Ed replies as I kneel down next to Ev.
"Do you have any friends you want to play with sweetie?" I ask and she simply fiddles with her braid.
The teacher starts talking to the parents who had come in but Ev sticks to me constantly.
We take Ev out the classroom for a second and kneel down in front of her.
"Ev, princess, what's wrong?" Ed asks as she stares at her feet.
"No one's my real friend here. They just talk to Arri when she picks me up because she's on the TV. They'll all talk to you because you famous. I don't fit in with our family," She starts to cry and I scoop her up.
"Baby girl, of course you fit in! You and your sisters are the most precious things to us. Is this why you're so quiet in class?"
"Yes," She buries her head into my chest as she cries and I stroke her hair as Ed goes to tell the teacher. I continue to shush Ev, annoyed and frustrated as no one will be friends with her for who she is.
