Rolfie and the lady drummer...
Josh POV
We just had lunch and now we were walking towards the Eiffel Tower. THE EIFFEL TOWER!!! I mean, how exciting is that?! This is like a moment in my life. After this, I’ll never be the same guy again.
Plus it had stopped raining, so I’m also a dry guy. Which is nice. Rain messes up my hair.
Daniel seemed to be happy too. He had a big smile on his face and was walking in a way I would have called ‘light-footed’ if I were a nice guy. But I wasn’t a nice guy, so I called it ‘skipping’. It looked very girly – and cute.
I was just about to say something, when Daniel suddenly stopped skipping. I looked at him questionably but he wasn’t looking at me but at something on his right. The look in his eyes caught me by surprise. It was a whole new look for me. The last two days I had been studying Daniel’s expressions but I had never seen him looking like this before. He looked focused and calm and for the first time all the other people rushing by didn’t seem to bother him. It was like he didn’t even realise they were there anymore , like he didn’t even realise I was there anymore.
He was watching an old couple sitting on one of the benches which were placed along the road. And when I say old, I mean really old. There wasn’t anything particularly special about them. They were just sitting there, his arm over her shoulder, feeding the birds (which was probably prohibited but oh well). However, something about them intrigued me and apparently Daniel, because he slowly walked their way and got on one knee on the middle of the path. The weirdest thing was that he didn’t seem to notice that he was annoying a lot of tourists and Parisians by sitting in their way. The only thing that seemed to be on his mind was the little screen of his camera. He was staring at it intently, he moved a little bit to the left, then a little to the right, he did something with the buttons and then he finally brought the camera up to his face. He moved his face closer to the screen, closed one eye, waited a second and then – click.
That was it. No second photograph, no other position. Just click. And by the look on his face, the result was satisfying. Then he just stood up and started skipping back to me like nothing happened.
Daniel looked up at me and I stared at him. I knew I was staring, but I couldn’t stop myself.
‘Coming?’ he asked.
‘Y-y-yeah,’ was my very smart reply.
I must say, I was a bit confused. What I just saw seemed so out of character for Daniel and at the same time I’d never seen him be so much like himself.
We were speed-walking, which looks charming I can tell you, but we had to catch up with our group. But while speed-walking, it seemed like the roles were turned around. Daniel was walking in front of me and I was sort of stumbling behind him, while I kept accidentally walking into people because I was too confused to remember I had to watch where I walked. So as you can imagine, it took some time before we finally reached the group. But when we did, we were just in time to hear Mrs Robins announce:
