It was later that evening, and the couple I had seen early was still on my mind. No matter what I did, I couldn't seem to erase that moment. I was lying on my bed, trying to figure out who they were -if I even knew them- until I heard a knock on my door.
"Yeah?" I yelled out.
"Can I come in?" It was Zack.
"Yeah."
The door slowly opened, and I was still lying on my bed, staring at the ceiling.
"You okay?" He asked. I didn't even have to look at him, and I knew his hands were in his pocket with his head slightly tilted.
"Yeah, I guess."
"You sure? 'Cause after we came back from bowling you've been up here in your room."
"So?"
"So, we've been home for about 5 hours now. You didn't even come down for dinner."
"I wasn't hungry." I lied.
"Come on Kendall. You and I both know that's not true. There's something bothering you. Just tell me, I'll listen."
I sighed, as I turned my head to look at him. Should I tell him? I thought But how would he know who they are. He probably didn't even see them. Then another voice came in. No, you should tell him. What if he did see them? He might be able to help figure out who it is.
"Fine." I groaned as I sat up. "I'll tell you."
For a moment he almost looked shocked, but quickly gave a weak smile, and sat down on my bed in front of me.
I closed my eyes for a split second to remember the scene, then opened them to talk.
"When we were leaving the bowling alley I had noticed a men and women -I'm assuming they were a couple- staring at me." I looked down at my bed sheets, and continued talking. "The thing that's been bothering me is they looked familiar."
"Maybe you saw them at a store or something?" Zack suggested.
I shook my head. "No not that kind of familiar. More like I've known them all my life. But I can't have. Can I?"
I looked back up at Zack hoping for an answer.
"I don't know." He sighed. "Look let's go into the Secret Room, and have some pizza, okay?"
I nodded my head. "Okay."
Zack and I walked through the Secret Door that was in my room, down to the living room, and Zack pulled out two boxes of pizza from the fridge nearby. We pulled over a coffee table to place down the pizza boxes, and sat down on the couch.
"So," Zack started. "After, what 5 hours of thinking, you couldn't figure out who they are?"
"Well, I've had an idea of who they might be, but I don't know."
"Who?" Zack asked, taking a bite out of his pizza.
"I was thinking my parents, but how could it be them? Do you think it's possible that they just happened to be there? Don't you think I
Zack shrugged. "Anything's possible."
I was about to grab my second piece of pizza when I heard a voice shouting.
"Kendall, Zack come down please! We're just about to start playing some games!"
I looked at Zack, my eyes must have looked like they were going to pop out. "What do we do?" I asked a bit panicked. "She can't hear us, no matter how loud we are."
"I know it's okay. I've actually found out something really cool about this place, come."
I followed Zack to the wall left of the couch, about 5 feet away. On the wall was a phone, and below was a book opened on a table.
"Watch this." Zack said. He quickly flipped through the book, and once he found the right page he dialed in a number, and waited.
"What are you-?"
"Shh." He whispered. "Patients."
I crossed my arms, waiting for something to happen.
"Zack?" I heard Mrs. Cook call again.
Within a second I heard a loud beep, and Zack starting shouting-
"Okay Mom, we'll be right down!"
He waited a few seconds before pushing a button on the phone.
"What was that?" I asked.
"It's like a telephone," Zack started to explain as we left the Secret Room. "Except, instead of calling someone, you can send out a message to any part of the house."
He opened the door, letting me walk through first. We rushed downstairs, finding Mr and Mrs Cook and Lily in the living room."Oh, there you two are." Said Mrs Cook. "Are you feeling alright Kendall?"
"Uh yeah. I just fell a sleep, that's all." I lied.
"Okay, well we have some pizza, if you'd like?"
"That would be great. Thanks."
I smiled as I sat down on the couch. A minute later Mrs Cook came back with a box of cheese pizza. She set it down on the coffee table, and sat down on the other couch across from us.
"Kendall have you ever played Monopoly?" Mr Cook asked.
I shook my head. "No, I haven't."
"Okay we'll teach you!" Lily exclaimed.
They set up the game, and taught me the basics. About an hour and a half later, Zack, Mr and Mrs Cook had lost, leaving Lily and I left. It had been only half an hour later when Lily was declared the winner. Afterwards we had decided to make some popcorn and watch a movie.
If you ask me, I really enjoyed myself. This was probably the first time in forever I actually spent time with people who cared about me, and had a great time.
By the time the movie was finished it was 11:30pm. Lily had gone up to bed, but Zack and I stayed downstairs for a bit.
"How did you like the movie Kendall?" Mr Cook asked trying to make conversation, yet failing.
"It was good." I replied with a smile.
"That's good."
The room was silent until Mrs Cook came back. "Okay you two, off to bed. It's getting late."
We stood up, said goodnight and walked towards the stairs. We only had walked up a few steps, when Zack pulled me back with one finger on his lips. I stopped, listening carefully. It was Mr and Mrs Cook. They were talking.
"So when's the tutor coming?" I heard Mr Cook ask.
"Monday." Mrs. Cook replied.
"Do Zack and Kendall know?"
"Uh, no. Not yet at least."
"Okay, well you better tell them soon. Tomorrow's Sunday, you know?"
"Yes I know. Well I should go check that the kids are in bed. Goodnight."
"Okay, goodnight sweetheart."
"She's coming!" I whispered, panicked.
"Run!" Zack whispered back.
We somehow managed to run to our rooms without anyone hearing us downstairs, and before Mrs. Cook came up to check on us.
Shortly after Mrs Cook had left my room, I sighed. "A tutor," I whispered to myself. "That'll be different."
After what felt like hours I fell asleep, even though it didn't feel like I was as my head filled my dreams with crazy possibilities of what my tutor was going to be like.
