Chapter 4 – Sound Check
I called Niall that night and arranged what we were all going to do. They had an interview in the morning, but him, another guy from his band and all of the members of 5SOS were going to meet us for our sound check in the afternoon. It turned out that we were playing at the same venue that we had met them at last night, so it was conveniently near their hotel.
Currently Derek, Alex and I were outside their apartment trying to fit all of our equipment into Alex’s tiny car. I stood beside Derek while we stared at the disassembled drum kit that wouldn’t fit in the trunk.
“Maybe if we jumped on it?” Derek suggested.
“Damage my drums, I damage you Derek!” Alex piped up from the front of the car.
“It’s fine Derek, I bet I could hold this and this in my lap on the way there.” I said as I pulled out a couple of the piece. I reorganized the remaining equipment before being able to successfully close the trunk. “It’s a good thing Kate and Brooke are meeting us there later, I don’t really know how were going to fit into this car.”
“Well, let’s try!” Alex called again, “I’m done everything in the front. Okay so, Emily get in the back and get bucked first and we’ll try to stack things around you.”
I climbed into the back and buckled myself in, waiting patiently for the next 15 minutes while Guitars, amps, drum kit pieces and bags were packed around and on top of me.
“Hey! It worked, we did it!” I heard Alex exclaim, and then heard a slap that sounded like a high five, I couldn’t see though because a bass drum was in my way. I heard someone make their way closer,
“Can you breathe in there Ems? All I can see is part of your foot.” Derek laughed and I raised my hand in a thumbs up over the equipment. There was the distinct sound of a picture being taken before I quickly lowered my hand. “This is so going on twitter!”
Two car doors slammed and we were off, to our first ever sold-out show.
After arriving and being dug out of the car we spent the next hour moving stuff and setting up equipment so we could do our sound check on time. After bringing the last of the equipment from the car Derek collapsed, ever so graciously to the ground and pretending he was dying, while Alex continued to work on his drums and dropped my box beside his.
Click. My phone made a loud sound when it took the picture and Derek turned to glare at me suspiciously.
“This is so going on twitter!” I mocked his saying from earlier and stuck out my tongue before posting the picture online. “Now, get your ass off the ground we have a sound check to do.” There was groaning but Derek got up and moved towards his guitar case.
I was in the middle of tuning one of the bass guitars when my phone started ringing. I noticed Niall’s name flashing on the screen before I picked up.
“’ello?” I said answered, putting the phone between my ear and shoulder blade before continuing with my task.
“Hey, can you come and tell the security guards that were allowed to be here? They aren’t letting us in.” The Irish accent told and I almost dropped the guitar.
“Shit! I forgot to tell them, I’ll be right there!” I said hanging up my phone before he could respond. “Anyone want to come with me to get the boys from security?”
“No.” Alex said from underneath his drum set, but Derek got up quickly dropping what he was doing.
“Yeah, I want to meet the pop stars.” I rolled my eyes and gestured for him to come.
Walking down the hallways, Derek tapped my shoulder and pointed out a trolley for carrying equipment in the corner.
“How did we not notice that? That would have made life so much easier!” I groaned, but that was not why Derek pointed it out to me. When I turned to look at him he was already across the hall jumping into it.
“Push me Ems!” He exclaimed, sitting down. I rolled my eyes and complied, walking down the hall pushing him. “You know you are really lame, generally when someone is pushing they’re running.”
“So damn demanding.” I mumbled before pushing the cart faster and picking up a run.
“Woo!” Derek screamed and put his hands in the air before turning back, “You’re still slow.”
“It’s not my fault your fat ass is hard to push!”
“I’ll have you know that my ass is perfectly fine!” Derek responded before turning back to look where we were going, “Shit! Slow down the hall ends!” I dug my heels into the ground trying to stop the cart, but the momentum was too much.
“Abandon ship!” Derek yelled before jumping out of the trolley while I let go. Derek hit the floor and rolled a bit while I tumbled backwards, having been leaning back to try and slow down the cart.
We both hit the floor with and grunt before we heard footsteps and looked up. A security guard was looking down at us, not very amused while Niall, a boy I recognized to be in his band and the members of 5SOS stood behind him all laughing their asses off.
“Found the pop stars!” Derek announced and I reached over and punched him playfully in the arm.
“Good job you idiot.”
A/N: I’m hoping to get a couple more chapters up later tonight and tomorrow :) Tell me what you think?
