The company arrived within a few feet from the home of Galadriel when Gandalf brought them to a sudden halt.
"You all will stay put while I go inside."
"Why?" Asked Boromir.
Gandalf gave him a slight frown. "We are not staying here- I will only go and speak to Lady Galadriel."
"Why must we stay behind?" Challenged Boromir.
"Because I said so." Gandalf retorted and walked off.
"Fine by me- I wouldn't go in there. Not even if the Arkenstone itself were inside." Gimli said.
The hobbits exchanged weary glances.
Legolas smirked and said, "Ah- the Arkenstone. My father said it was more of a cursed piece of dragon waste than a valuable gem."
Gimli's mouth dropped. He then gripped his axe with two hands and started to rush at the elf, when Aragorn stepped in front of him.
"Save it for the orcs."
"He insulted the Arkenstone and my kin. I will not stand for it! The elf must pay!"
Gimli tried to get past but was then blocked by Boromir.
"Is this some sort of conspiracy?!" Yelled the dwarf.
"Now master dwarf, Legolas was only joking."
"No one jokes about the Arkenstone!"
Here Legolas stepped in next to Aragorn. "Gimli, I'll tell you what, you insult my family heirloom and we will call it fair."
Gimli thought for a second. "What is your heirloom?"
Legolas closed his eyes as if to picture it. "A transparent jar of diamond moon dust."
Gimli nodded and thought of an insult. He then said, "That dust is worth no more than dragon scales!"
Legolas gave a straight face and nodded solemnly. "We are even now."
At that moment Gandalf came back looking discouraged.
"The lady Galadriel is not well. Her Ring has been taken. Also another note was left.
"Only one more gem left I must get
deep in the woods where dark ones live
Next down, down, down I'll sit
Where dragons have gold and none to give"
"He is headed to Mirkwood then unto, " Here Gandalf turned to Gimli and asked, "Where are the dwarf rings kept?"
"It is said the foundations of the dwarf mine are the seven rings. Many were destroyed by dragons. The few surviving rings are protected deep in the Iron Hills."
"Then we shall press onto the Mirkwood immediately."
"How does Bilbo know where all the rings are kept?" Asked Frodo.
"Simple, One Ring to rule them all, one Ring to find them. The Ring is seeking them out." Gandalf said gravely.
They turned and headed back the way they had came. Aragorn hurried up to Legolas who was scouting ahead.
"That was a quick save- letting Gimli insult your family heirloom."
Legolas looked at the ranger in confusion then laughed. "There is no transparent jar of diamond moon dust."
Aragorn smiled at the clever elf. "Still that was a nice save."
Legolas smiled back. "Anything to get the last word in with a dwarf. "
