Chapter 1: The Extractor
I sat in my car and looked up at the gigantic federal looking building in front of me. The white marble, seven story structure stood out from the rest of the block that was mostly made up of rustic brick office buildings. I glanced at the front door and internally winced. I have nothing to worry about; I thought to myself as I pried my fingers from the steering wheel. This was absolutely the right thing to do. I mean I don't have what it takes anyway. I took one last deep breath and stepped out of my safe, warm, car.
I walked to the buildings front entrance smiling at the guard who only scowled at me and looked away. I opened the door and stepped into the lobby. Pretty fancy. Everything was made of black and white marble, except for the expensive furniture and humongous, million dollar, crystal chandelier that was hanging right above my head. I kept walking, plastered a fake smile on my face as I walked up to the girl at the girl at the front desk. She was older than me by a few years with choppy bleach blonde hair, small boobs, and was at least a head shorter than me. She returned my smile with one of her own.
"Welcome Dr. Elliot's Extraction Facility, did you come here with questions or do you have an appointment with one of our doctors?"
"I have an appointment." I gave the woman all of my information and she instructed me to sit down and wait until someone came to see me. So I sat down in a boney, most likely insanely expensive chair and started flipping through a magazine. I tried to pretend like I was actually reading the stupid thing but I doubted that I was fooling anybody. As time passed by I got more nervous looking up every time the woman at the front desk moved. There is no backing out now. I mean what's the worst thing that can happen? About a half hour later a man in a green dress shirt and black slacks came stumbling out of a door besides the main desk. He was older, maybe in his early forties, with a slight belly and a receding hairline. He spotted me seconds later, smiled, and started making his way over to me.
"Ms. Colburn!" He smiled excited to meet me, greeting me with a wide smile. "Stanton Corlander, it's a pleasure to meet you. For a while there we didn't think you were going to make it."
"Oh god, I'm sorry I'm late. Work ran over." I lied smoothly but he seemed to buy it.
"It's totally fine, completely understandable." He said then helped me up from my seat and led me through the same door he came out of. As soon as he opened the door a man came through with a blank stare and a loopy smile on his face. He stumbled forward walking by us like we didn't exist. Two men came out after him and escorted him to the front door then helped him into a fancy town car.
"Is he okay?"
"Fine, it's just the medication we give before the operation. Just to keep him relaxed." He laughed at my expression and put his hand on my shoulder. "Nothing to worry about, I promise. I suppose operation was the wrong word to use. I should have said extraction. What we do isn't nearly as invasive as an operation I promise." Before I could ask more questions he opened the door wider and motioned for me to step in. He led me down a long, blindingly white hallway that seemed to go on forever. Every six feet down the hall there was another door. I couldn't help but wonder what they were for.
"What are those rooms for?" I asked at we walked.
"Post op."
"Well isn't that where we are supposed to be going?"
"No today, we just pulled your information and past medical history from some of your other doctors so the post op step in your case isn't really necessary."
"You called my other doctors?" I asked and he gave me a sideways glance.
"You gave us permission to do so in that online application you filled out." I nodded having nothing else to say on the matter. I honestly didn't remember giving that permission, I definitely would have remembered, right? I shook the thought out of my head and did my very best to stay calm and not think about it. Everything was going to be fine. This was government approved. The brochure said I wouldn't feel any pain and only said that I might experience some minor discomfort after the operation- I mean extraction. We finally reached the end of the hallway and he stopped, opened the door, and smiled at me.
