Chapter 5: Needles and Yoda

When I opened my eyes again the bright light nearly blinded me. By the time my eyes adjusted to my new surroundings I realized I was in the hospital surrounded in a sea of flowers. Roses, tulips, sunflowers, but most of all daisies; my favorite. My room was empty but the window was open, shining bright light across my floral hospital room. And I was in an awkward position. Naturally I was a side sleeper but I was lying uncomfortably on my stomach. I tried to sit up but I couldn't. I looked down at my arms and noticed the straps that were restraining me to my bed. I tried to move my legs but they were strapped down as well.

It must be because of my back, I thought. I took a deep breath trying to calm down. Could it all have happened? The superhero battle, the explosion at my house? It didn't seem real and it sure didn't make sense. I mean how could I have stopped a freaking explosion from killing dad and me. The door opened then clicked closed and I looked over my shoulder.

"Hello?" Footsteps rushed to my side. Cara pulled up a chair next to my bed side and pulled me to her for a hug.

"God you're okay!" She blubbered sobbing into my shoulder.

"It's okay Car, I'm fine."

"Fine" She snapped pulling away, "How would you know if your fine? You've been unconscious for almost two days now."

"Two days?" She nodded. "What are the doctors saying?"

"That you'll be fine," I gave her a flat look and she flicked my ear, "He said that you'll need rest and time to heal. He also said that he'll give you some kind of lotion stuff for your back." She looked sad now, forcing a smile on her face.

"How bad is my back?" She glanced at my back trying to keep that fake smile plastered on her face.

"It will heal..."

"Cara." She took a deep breath pulling a strand of hair behind her ear.

"It was bad a first....it was raw, but everyone is hopeful. The skin won't be exactly the same as it was before but it will get better."

"So I'll have scar tissue." She sighed and nodded taking my hand. We sat in silence for a long time neither of us knowing exactly what to say. Now I'd have a scar on my back for the rest of my life, it would never go away. Unless I got some kind of surgery but I wouldn't have the money to cover it. The ugly scar was never going away. But there was no sense in making Cara feel worse when she's already so close to breaking down.

"Where's Mom?"

"Dad made her go home, she stayed here with you for the first thirty three hours but she needed rest."

"Good, and Dad?"

"He didn't have a scratch on him. The doctors are saying you saved him from the worst of it."

"What? Saved? I didn't save him! I didn't do anything! What could I have possibly done to save him anyway? I'm just normal it's not like I could do anything if I really wanted to. I'm not a hero! We were-we-we were just thrown from the fire. I didn't really do anything. He was probably just thrown-" I was cut off in mid rant. A nurse came rushing in dodging all the flowers and get well presents to get to my bed side. She looked at the wildly beeping heart monitor.

"What happened?" She asked Cara, ignoring me completely.

"I don't know she was fine. We were just talking and she just...I don't know. Then the machine started beeping like crazy. I swear she was totally fine a minuet ago."

"Hey!" I yelled and both of them turned to me. "I'm fine okay! You're ok , I'm okay, we're all okay. There's nothing to worry about I'm totally fine okay!" They both gave me a long look then looked at one another.
