Chapter 17: B and E...Sort Of

We sat in the dark, the two of us watching the door very closely. Just waiting. The lights in the entire apartment were off and we didn't turn them on when we arrived. I mean, why would we announce that we were breaking and entering? Yeah, breaking and entering...that was not my idea.

We both sat in living room. Telex in the big leather massage chair while I was on the couch that matched. Neither of us spoke. He just waited patiently, while I spent my time glaring at the door. It's no secret that I thought this idea sucked. In fact, a few short hours ago I had been very vocal about it, not that it made a difference. I was out voted by Ashley and bucket head who obviously had no respect for the law what so ever. I huffed crossing my arms, adjusting myself on the couch so I sat pretzel style. Telex however hadn't moved an inch since he sat down on his fancy chair. How did he do that?

The clock ticked by slowly. The silence was torture and against my will my eye lids closed. The air in the room seemed comfortably warm relaxing me further. My breathing slowed in suit and my muscles began to unwind. But a small click and buzz drew me out of coma. I didn't have to open my eyes to know what had happened. I knew the sound well.

"I knew you were human." Telex chuckled in response. He'd turned on the massage chair. I could hear the buzzing shift and change as the magical massage machines moved up and down his back. Of course he picked the cool chair. "What happened to being quiet?"

I opened my eyes when Telex didn't respond. The chair changed from a rub massage to small chops that made Telex's already distorted voice sound more robotic. I laughed and leaned back into the comfy sofa. I took my eyes off the chair and looked out the window. It's not fair that a scum bag like Max Tolinski could afford a gorgeous high rise apartment in the middle of down town while I, a hard working middle class super hero, was stuck in a teeny tiny apartment with one bed room and a toilet that clogged every other minuet. Where was the freaking justice in that? But hey at least I could enjoy the view until the jerk got home. From where I sat I had a beautiful view of the lake. It was completely black and devoid of color except for the occasional fishing boat's yellow lights that reflected in the water. Who knew down town could be so peaceful.

The front door clicked and I sat up, my back straight as a board. Telex froze too. The only sound in the entire room was the chair. He quickly turned it off a we watched the door. The lock jingled softly and door knob turned. As soon as the front door opened all of the lights in the entire apartment went on blinding me for a fraction of a second.

I turned off my night vision and watched as Max Tolinski stepped into the hallway, dropping the keys to his Ferrari into a small silver dish near the door. He had no idea that we were here. Unlike the last time I'd seen him he looked a little less, I don't know, clean cut. He was sporting a two-day beard and looked a little tired. But hey maybe dealing takes it out you. He turned his eyes widening slightly when he saw us. I expected him to freak out, scream, run for the door, or even pull a gun out of his belt. But he did none of the above. He smiled. Not a creepy 'I'm going to kill you later' smile. Just a smile. A smile like you'd give a friend you'd invited over. What the hell?

"Well, it's about time you two showed up."

Earlier that morning

"So, you didn't make it home last night?" Cara led and I rolled my eyes.

"Yeah, sorry about that things got kind of...weird, I guess. I don't know. But I think I'll see you in a few hours."

"Few hours?"

"Well, yeah."

"I'll be in school."

"Oh....uh, forgot. Well, I'll see you after school." I poured the coffee into plan black mug and stepped away from the counter. Ducking under the counter door I walked to Ashley's office and took the elevator chair down. Thankfully it didn't cut off the call.
