Chapter 13: Team Up

"Rebecca."

"Ashley?" Holy crap.

"Your vacation is over. Suit up and get to Dorson's." Before I could even start asking questions she hung up on me. But I'd already started moving the second she said your vacation is over. I ran to my closet and threw all of my clothes out of the way and there in the back stood a safe. Don't ask me how it got there because I have no freaking clue, but I know somehow Ashley got the huge thing in there. I quickly dialed the code into the digital lock and pulled out everything I needed. I yanked on my suit in record time, strapped my "thigh belt" on my leg (no idea what its actually called), slipped my telescoping baton into its holder, and put on my dark grey mask. I took just a minuet to admire my super self in the mirror but it was a minuet too long.

"Rebecca I'm home, you better not have called mom. I can blackmail you too you know." Crap! God I called Cara home didn't I? Well shit! What the hell am I going to do now! "Rebecca?" My eyes darted to my bedroom window and I took a quick breath: the fire escape. Moving as quietly as possible I slowly lifted my window and ducked through. Unfortunately the fire escape had seen better days but then again Joey broke in all the time so I'm sure it's fine...probably. "Rebecca!" The door to bedroom opened and I hit the deck. Shit shit shit shit. God why does having a secret identity have to be so damned complicated.

I hit the cement silently and moved for cover just like Ashley taught me. I stuck to the shadows of my building though it was pretty much pointless. It was already 6:00 which meant that all of the seniors in my building were either sleeping or just settling in for the night. But if anything I guess it was good practice. I slipped into the ally and found the manhole cover. God this is going stuck. Trying not to think about it too much I jumped into the sewers with a huge nasty splash. The loud sound echoed off of the metal walls sending a shiver down my spine. I'd just started walking when my phone went off scaring me half to death. It's a Cara.

"Cara...hey!" I said with a little too much enthusiasm.

"What's up with you?"

"Uh nothing...what do you need I'm a little...busy." Oh god there's a rat and it's looking right frigging at me!

"Busy? What are you talking about? Your supposed to be here. I mean I was busy and you called me home but your not even here."

"Yeah about that, something came up and Ashley called me into work."

"Are you serious!" She snapped.

"Listen, I'm not happy about it either but it's the way things are." That's a good little rat. You can look at me all you want just don't come near me. "Uh, I mean someone's got to make the money right."

"Whatever, when are you coming back."

"Not sure but it will probably be late."

"Fine, then I'm ordering a Pizza." And like that she hung up. Jesus that was close. I shove my phone into my belt pocket and keep walking down the nasty sewer pipe that only seemed to get smaller and smaller. Ok she said to look for another door. Where the heck is it? I struggle to turn not having much room to move but then bingo. A foot in front of me stood a small maintenance door. It wasn't much to look at but I guess that's the point. I crouched down and slipped the key Ashley had given me into the lock. The door didn't open easily it took a good shove or two before I could get through to the old sewer system that was thankfully a lot bigger than the pipe I was in.

Unlike the newer system, the old sewers were made of good old fashioned brick. But hey at least the freaking rat is gone. I stepped down from my small ledge into the very bottom of the tunnel. I clicked on my tiny flash light and paned it around. This place was really falling apart; random bricks scattered randomly around the area as well as broken bottles and a few old cigarettes. I guess Ashley and I aren't the only people down here after all. But I'm alone at least for now.
