Chapter 20: Pushing Through

I woke up at 6:40 and the first thought that crossed my mind was that I hadn't gone to bed alone. I looked to my left and saw Joey who was still fast asleep. The normally good-looking guy was looking worse for wear. His long blonde hair was a rat's nest and he had dark circles under eyes. God I really screwed up big last night.

I quietly pulled myself out of bed careful not to disturb him. After dealing with me last night he deserved a good night's sleep. I crept out of my room, with my clothes, making a bee line for the shower but I didn't take the time to enjoy it. I hopped out after 10 minutes and quickly dressed. If I didn't leave now, I'd never get out of here. Everyone was still in mama bear mode which I guess was comforting but not good for a super hero who was late for work. I snuck down the hallway, avoiding the living room and made straight for a kitchen just to come face to face with a very awake Monroe. He looked better than Joey but that could just be because he managed to sneak in a shower this morning.

"Going somewhere?" He asked suspiciously and I bit my tongue.

"To my work trip, remember?" His eyes widened.

"You were serious about that?"

"Yes, I was serious about that. I have to get to the airport."

"What about Cara?"

"I called my mom, she knows. And I told Cara about it yesterday."

"What about your clothes." Shit clothes. Of course, I'd need clothes for a bullshit work trip.

"Shit, I didn't pack anything last night." I ran back to my room with Moe right on my tail. I quickly snatched the suitcase out from under my bed but in the process woke up Joey.

"What the hell is going on?" He mumbled half asleep.

"Nothing your dreaming, go back to sleep." I muttered and started grabbing clothes out from my dresser.

"What the hell is going on?" He asked Moe.

"Rebecca's leaving. Apparently, she has a work trip." I glared at him. God couldn't he just get off my ass. It's not easy lying when he is so suspicious of everything I do.

"You do?"

"Yes, can everyone stop acting like it's a big surprise. You know what, I'm calling my boss and she can tell you herself." I dial Ashley Dorson's official work phone. Please god let this work.

"Hello?" She answers happily like it's not the crack of dawn.

"Good morning Ms. Dorson." I said politely. The line went silent.

"What are you doing?" She asked dropping the cutesy stuff.

"I just wanted to make sure your still okay with taking me to the airport?" I smiled and Monroe glared at me.

"I'll be there." She said and hung up. Oh thank god she got it.

"See easy. She said she'll be here soon." I think the waiting was the hardest part. It wasn't long after I made the call that everyone got up, including Cara. She refused to look at me all morning long. I never thought I'd be thankful to have to take down an evil super villain before. Anything is better than this. The majority of us sat silence waiting for the call while Karma tried in vain to cheer everyone up. Yes, I came home last night but that didn't change the fact that they thought I was lying to them. It didn't change how they felt. A half hour passed and I got the text from Ashley.

"She's outside, I should go. I'll see you all when I get back." But that wasn't goodbye. They all followed me out of my apartment, watching my every move. I felt like a bug under a magnifying glass. I mean you make one mistake in your life, granted mine was a huge mistake, and no one ever trusts you again. But at least Joey carried my luggage for me. When I got out side Ashley was waiting in the lot. She gave me her happy employer smile and wave which I returned. I didn't stop smiling until we were a block away from my apartment. When the car turned Ashley was looking at me. "Sorry, I know that wasn't the plan." I sighed leaning against the head rest.
