Chapter 12: Faking Normal

Sure, at first I thought getting grounded wouldn't be such a bad thing, I honestly did. I mean I just had to be normal. Wake up, shower, make coffee, fight the traffic to work, work the casher, run the café, deal with crazy old ladies and their coupons, and finally go home. It was easy, it was normal, it was something people did every day. I took pleasure in the first few days of my forced vacation. I relaxed. I took my time. I did my job. But it wasn't enough.

Ashley cut me completely out of the loop. She stopped being my hero boss and was just my work boss. But what killed me the most was that I didn't know what the hell was going on. I mean I discovered a drug front! And now, well, she won't even tell me what's going on with Telex.

So the only reliable information I had was the news which told me that Ashley was doing hero stuff, making a bit of a name for herself-For Me. Sure it was just small stuff. Saving kids, helping old people, and taking down purse snatchers but it should have been me! It was my suit! It should have been me out there doing stuff not her. But that's the way things are, at least for now.

"No organizations have stated a connection to this new super in town-not the LDA or The London Society- so for now it is the popular belief that this individual is working independently. But despite several good acts police are still warning everyone to be wary. Here's a clip from earlier this morning." The screen transitioned to a fit man in his late fifties with greying hair. He didn't look warry or worried at all. He just looked bored.

"Just because this 'hero', if we can even call her that, has done a few nice things for a few people...well it doesn't really prove anything, does it. She a loose cannon, a wild card, who works alone or worse with that nut in the red mask." The screen cuts again back to the reporter.

"That was Police Chief Sloan raising yet another important issue. Yes, this girl is doing good out there but is she partnered up with another new comer to Vaulding, this man." A grainy picture of Telex popped up on screen for a few seconds, before cutting back to the news desk. "All though news of this man is shrouded in speculation we know for certain that he was at Echo, a club in New Vega where thousands of dollars of property damage were caused for a still undisclosed reason. If the female super is somehow connected to do this man they'll at least have that property damage to answer to. After the break, our reporter Sofia Lingard hits the street to see what you the people-" The TV blinks off.

"Why are you watching this crap." Cara asks controller in hand. She's dressed for a day out wearing her favorite black coat and white jeans. I on the other hand had just rolled out bed.

"It's just news."

"News? Are you kidding me? It's entertainment posing as news! It only spreads gossip."

"Cara. It tells me what time it is, what the weather is, how bad the traffic is, and when someone gets shot. It's the news." I push out from my kitchen table and dump my ice cold coffee in the sink.

"What's with you."

"Nothing, I'm fine."

"Yeah, that's convincing. I'm going to head out. I'll be at Nina's house and I'll probably get home late because we're going to a see a movie."

"Okay, see you tonight." Cara left seconds later leaving me to my thoughts which were not happy ones. I got ready, throwing on my favorite sweater and blue jeans. I ditch my boots, happy the snow was finally starting to melt, even if it was just a little bit. The weather was mild with just a slight chill in the air as I made my way to work. Red town streets were just starting to get crowded as I slipped into my parking spot in front of Dorson's. Let the morning rush begin.
