Chapter 14: True Lies
Well yesterday was interesting...
"Are you okay?" Ashley asked through coms.
"Yeah I'm fine." I rolled over on to my knees and pushed myself up off the ground. "Hey are you...okay?" Telex was already on his feet staring menacingly down at me. I stood and walked over to him. "So what now?" Telex didn't answer he turned and left me alone on the roof. "Hey!" I shouted and he turned.
"I thought we were working together."
"I didn't say indefinitely."
"You need my help."
"You can't keep up." He said coolly and a felt my blood pressure rise.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me." God this guy is like a female Ashley but more of an asshole. But he did have a bit of a point.
"Ok, I get it. But can I ask how you're going to find those drug dealers?"
"I'll ask the right people." He said simply than turned.
"And that will take you weeks, probably months. I will admit that you have more skills than I do but I have more resources."
"First you have a boss, then your independent, then you and your boss are independent. But now, now you're saying you have resources. One of these things are not like the other. Independent heroes don't have resources." Now he was in my face.
"If were going to work together you should probably know that I don't get intimidated easily and this is not a good way to start off our little partnership." He wasn't distracted by my little quip and went right for the heart of the matter.
"If you've got resources you don't need me."
"I need skill, and that is something you have more of than I do." We're nose to nose and no one was backing down now. "I'm new at this. I've got a good teacher now but two is better than one. We both get a lot of this. And say I'm lying to you, do you really think you couldn't take me if you had to?" He was silent for a long time then he took a step away.
"Fine." Then he was gone.
Since that exceptionally awkward conversation with Telex yesterday I've been working in the base doing research. Although Ashley wasn't happy about my decision to work with Telex I think she at least understands why it's a good idea. Whether she likes it or not it's clear that the man has skills and obviously he knows more than he's letting on. Between him and Ashley I can learn a lot and maybe survive this whole super hero thing.
For the millionth time today I looked over Carlos Serrano's file which was surprisingly empty considering everything we'd seen from him. He had a slew of charges on him from a few years ago but nothing recently. He'd been charged with drug possession with the intention to sell earlier this year but the charges didn't stick and he was released with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. Well he wouldn't have to worry about cops anymore I guess. I glanced at a picture of Serrano that Ashley borrowed from the cops. By the time the police got on the scene Serrano was practically unrecognizable. It was obvious that the gigantic hole through his neck is what killed him but that's it. His body had been destroyed by the debris of the building. And according to Ashley they still hadn't identified him yet. What a bad way to go.
"How goes it? Any problem with the system?" Ashley asked from behind me setting a steaming cup of coffee on the edge of table.
"No it's fine, I just wanted finish up on Serrano." I shrug waving my hand across the hologram.
