The trees swayed and shook off leaves violently as the crazy wind soared through the branches, gathering up dead leaves from the forest floor and tossing it here and there like a child at play.
Lightening flashed under the clouds and it was accompanied moments later by a low distant rumble announcing an impending rain as the Greyish-black cloud tumbled over each other as if hurrying to a certain destination.
A dark cave was exposed by another lightening and followed by the light of the thunder which crisscrossed the sky. Leaves rustled at the entrance of the cave, exchanging positions and seeking a better place to alight with the aid of the cold wind.
Jason Lockwood softly alighted several paces away from the mouth of the cave. He could hear the mad rushing sound of the close by water Fall at the far side of the Forest. He had managed to leave the castle and had come to where he always found serenity whenever he needed it.
He loved the smell of the woods. He loved the sight of the scurrying animals roaming the floor of the forest. He loved the water fall particularly, the rush, the foaming of the water and the reflection of the forest world and sometimes the moon on the surface of the flowing water.
He loved to sit on a rock at the edge of the fall and watch the little fishes and other aquatic animals swim with such ease without a care in the world. He loved to watch them capture their preys and dive for cover when he disturbed the water by wading his hand in it.
As he took a step forward past the cave, heading to the falls, his nostrils flared. He could smell someone. He sniffed the air carefully and ingested the familiar scent, carefully trying to detect where it was coming from.
He turned sharply towards the the entrance of the cave which was lit by touches mounted on both sides of the cave walls. His brows arched, his fangs shot out and he groaned quietly. Charlotte.
He strode majestically into the cave, the tail of his coat flowing after him. He reduced his strides to a slow walk when he got to the corridor of the cave. In the very core of the cave was an ancient tomb, covered in dust and cobwebs and at the side of it stood Charlotte running her hands over the dusty slab of the tomb, destroying some of the cobwebs which stuck to her fingers.
Having perceived his presence, without turning, she softly acknowledged him. "Milord!"
With his hands behind him, he remained at the entrance just at the edge of the few stone steps below him, leading down into the belly of the cave where Charlotte stood. "What are you doing here?" His gruff voice echoed in the cave followed by the whistling of the passing wind outside.
Some parts of the cave were covered in shadows. He watched a scorpion skitter across the stony floor at the other end and watched a python crawl slowly over a rock into the shadows. He heard the squeaking of rats from somewhere in the cave and also saw a big spider spinning its web around a new prey.
He was not surprised to see all these extra dwellers, after all, the cave was thousands of years old. He was however surprised that a fox or any other wild mammal had not made it its lair yet, besides just slitherers, skitterers and scamperers if words like that existed anyway.
"If not to admire the tomb of Merishka, what else?" She simply replied, her voice as smooth as ever.
"You are not supposed to be here until the sacred night!" He told her.
She hesitated before replying. "For centuries...I have waited and yet, no sacred night...nothing!" She stated. "...and still, Dracula's bride remains dead and cold in this grave."
Slowly, Jason descended the steps, stopping several feet from her. "Let her continue to remain dead, I'll say." He said impassively but slowly.
She turned to face him all of a sudden. "For how long?" She asked, her temper rising. "For how long are we going to remain night crawlers, milord? For how long am I going to continue hoping on this good for nothing worthless ring?!" She spat, showing him the ring with her hands splayed before her face. "All I want is her." She said calmly now, pointing at the tomb. "She is the mother of all vampires and she alone can grant all vampires the freedom we seek."
