(Hunter's POV)
I climb the stairs to Riley's room, knowing she isn't awake yet. I open her door slowly. "Hey, babe, it's time to get up," I whisper. Then I see her. She's so pale. "Riley," I say. I step closer to her and put a hand to her face.
It's ice cold.
I start to shake her shoulder. "Riley! Riley, wake up!"
She doesn't move.
I take her hand, and find a note. "No, no, no," I say, beginning to cry. Before I take it, I grab her wrist. It's stained with dry blood. And I don't feel a pulse.
I take the note. "Riley, Riley no," I sob. I take her into my arms. I take her cold, dead body into my arms, and cry.
Finally, I get myself to read the note.
"Hunter,
I'm so, so sorry. I just, I couldn't take it any longer. I'm ugly. I'm fat. The only person that will care about my going will be you. You'll be okay. I swear. You'll get over it-you'll get over me. I pretended to be happy for you. But I couldn't pretend any longer. I'm sorry. I love you. Goodbye, Hunter.
-Riley"
No, no, no. "Riley no!" I scream. Sam comes in at my scream. A shriek escapes her lips, tears already filling her eyes. "Sam," I say, as calmly as I can through the sobs, "I want you to go call 911."
"Is she-"
"Sam, just go," I cry. She turns and runs out of the room.
"Hello? ... My sister... She's dead. ... Yes, there is. ... Yes." She hands me the phone, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Hello, yes, my girlfriend she... She committed suicide." I give the operator the address.
"What's her name?"
"Riley. Riley Ann Parker."
"Okay, just stay calm. An ambulance is in its way."
"Okay, okay, thank you," I cry.
Before long, an paramedics and policemen are here. The paramedics take my baby away. "Wait!" I call after them. One of them turns around, a short woman with a kind face. "Can I say goodbye first?"
She nods and makes the other woman step away from the gurney. I walk to Riley, to the girl I love. I smooth her hair from her face, and kiss her forehead. "I love you, Riley Ann. I always will." My tears spill onto her cheeks and I wish this was like one of those fairytales and she would magically wake up and be okay.
But she won't. She never will.
~
"I'm just winging this, because I couldn't get myself to sit down and write a eulogy. Let's see, there's so much I could say about my Riley. She-she was my best friend. She was my girlfriend. She was the girl I loved. The only girl I'd ever, truly loved.
"I remember when I first met her. It was about five in the morning. She ran right into me. I saw her, and was literally speechless. She was so beautiful.
"We went to the zoo once. We walked around for hours. Her favorite part was the giraffes. I'll never forget how her eyes lit up when she saw them. She was so... intrigued... by them. It was beautiful.
"I loved everything about that girl. The way she always walked a half-step behind me, because she didn't like leading the way. How she would blush when I called her beautiful. How she would cuddle up next to me when we would watch a movie.
"It would be nice if someone would come up here and stop me because I could go on all day." With that, Alex stands and comes up to me. He wraps an arm around my shoulders and takes me back to the our pew.
I can't watch them lower her in the ground. I turn around and try to stop the tears that are coming. But it's no use.
The girl I love is dead.
Riley is dead and she's not coming back.
