I rode Buckley so badly after I saw that cheating fucker. I kicked him, like I have never kicked him before, pulling roughly on his mouth to turn him around quickly. I felt horrible as I rode into the barn, “I’m sorry boy, I’m so, so, so sorry!” I muttered, pressing my forehead to his, his head resting in my hands as I sat cross legged on the ground. He blew warm air onto my skin, I smiled in spite of how shit I felt. He nudged at my face, “You want all this gear off my boy?” I asked, he made a small whinnying noise as I stood and began unwrapping the bandages off his legs. I was just rolling up the last bandage when I heard the sounds of numerous pairs of boots on the concrete floor of the barn,

“Maggie!” Dad said, surprised, “What are you doing home so early? I thought you’d be gone until at least dinner?”

“Same,” I answered without turning around to face him, “But Buck wasn’t feeling that great, he was a bit fresh to take down today. Not having been ridden for a couple of days and all.” I finished the bandage and began to undo the shining gear on Buckley’s back,

“Mags don’t worry about that. Now you’re home you can help these guys with their horses, and Harley and I can do some work.” I finally turned to face dad. Behind him, stood about 10 guys, they all wore white cowboy hats, sparkling smiles, matching white shirts, dark jeans and boots. I felt a smile creep onto my face, cute American visitors. Jake who?

“Well. I’m sure I can handle that!” I smiled genuinely at the group, “Is there like, a leader or something?” Blank faces stared back at me, “Like a captain?” They all laughed and nodded, directing towards a guy who stepped forward from the group,

“Chase,” He offered his hand, “Chase Mitchells.”  I looked up shyly at this guy as I took his hand; he was tall, must have been over 6 foot. He had shaggy black hair, and the most gorgeous grey-blue eyes.

“Hey Chase. So, I’ll be dealing with you then?” I smiled happily,

“Looks like it!” He smiled back,

“Oh, dad, when Jacob gets home tell him to go back home. Like his home.” I said quietly, dad looked worried but nodded,

“Go on then, go have some fun!” he shooed us from the barn, I dropped Chase’s hand, embarrassed that I had still been holding it,

“You guys go and wait over there, where the horses are tied up in the arena,” I pointed to where 15 horses were dozing in the sun, “I’ll be out soon.” I watched them go, then grabbed my list of the names of people I had paired with horses. Was I that dipshit I hadn’t noticed they were all guys? After retrieving the list and Buckley I walked out to the small arena. I quickly tied Buckley to the fence, then walked inside,

“Chase, you wanna come help me?” I asked shyly, he grinned and nodded, somebody else yelled ‘get in Chase!’ and the whole group cracked up laughing, he walked right up to me, standing so we weren’t even centimetres apart, before bending down and whispering in my ear,

“Ignore them; they are just jealous I got to hold hands with the beautiful girl on the farm.” He smiled then stood at my side. We began calling out names and assigning horses to boys, finally we made it through all nine of them, it took a while, I had to give the boys a full rundown of what the horse was like, blah, blah, blah. The final one to go was Chase, I was nervous as I showed him to his horse,
