My eyes are open.
But I see nothing.
I can hear nothing.
I am nothing.
I can feel my body, but I can't move.
I am floating or sinking...
There is a whisper in my ear, echoing in my head...
The van is moving. I can feel the tyres hitting the gravel road.
It is dark. I am scared.
We juddered to a halt. I fell over.
I am me again. I am human - I mean.
Mabel is here...she's human too. She's holding my hand.
The van careers left. It falls to the floor.
She says I'll be okay. I am not alone.
Thick, billowing clouds of smoke erupt from the engine.
Mabel says she has to go. I don't want her to go. I'm scared.
Flames engulf the front of the van. There are screams.
Don't leave. Please. I'm scared.
A rapid heat spreads as the fire comes.
Mabel has led me to a door. She told me to go through it.
A group of men tried desperately to prize the doors open
I don't want to leave. But Mabel says I have to.
Consecutive bangs can be heard as the men try to break the door.
The door is open. I must go through.
The safety lock smashes off.
Mabel said goodbye. She said I must wake up.
They scrabble wildly to get to the casualty.
I must wake up.
I must wake up.
They find a pile of boxes where the casualty is. They start to remove them.
Time to wake up.
The boxes fell away.
My eyelids flew open and I started hyperventilating. A cacaphony of voices surrounded me.
"The specimen is okay."
"Specimen? That's no specimen! That's a child sir!"
"Shut up Keahi."
"No sir! He was human! And still is!"
"Keahi, remember who has the power to remove you from this operation."
"You sir..."
"Good. Now shut up."
"Yes sir."
The voices died down as I was carried off and laid on a rock by someone. I couldn't see their face. My vision was hazy.
"You okay kid?"
A kind, gentle voice asked.
I lifted my head weakly. I tried to speak.
"I-I-I-I..."
A hand stroked my hair.
It felt nice.
"You'll be okay...don't listen to Trigger and Powers...I know you're still human underneath..."
I finally mustered an ounce of strength.
"Who...are...you..."
The voice was like silk when she replied.
"My name is Keahi. I won't hurt you."
"I can't sleep..." I mumured.
She pulled me into her lap and layed her jacket over me.
"I can help with that..." she whispered sweetly.
Then she sang. It was like morning birdsong. I found myself reluctantly drifting into the abyss of sleep.

"Sleep now my dear child,
The moon is bright and grey,
Sweet moonbeams dance now to guide you,
Send you merrily on your way...

Stars will shine as night draws in,
Winter birds flying by,
Wish deeply on your wings of dreams,
And take flight to the sky...

I will wait for your return,
The journey you take is long,
The night took you away,
I'll sing my love as a song...

One day you will return again,
To our garden of peace in space,
Here I shall await your return,
Just to see the beauty of your face...

Sleep now...

Sleep now....."
