Chapter 79

Luca woke up feeling groggy.  He sat up in bed and stretched trying to acclimate himself to his surroundings.  Oh yes a hotel.  It had been a long time since he'd slept alone in a bed.  He was so used to having Arienne's body next to him.  God he missed her; her laugh, her smile, her sexy body laying naked next to his.  He slammed his body back down in bed and huffed.  He couldn't stop the growing erection under the sheets.  He hadn't made love to her in three weeks but that was totally his fault not hers.  He was deep in thought about Ari when there was a knock on his door.  "Luca you up?"  Paulo was up.  "I'm getting in the shower.  Be done soon" he answered.  Paulo said they would wait and they could get food and then go back to the hospital. They arrived at the hospital, got on the elevator and pressed '11'.  Each of them deep in thought, probably going over in their minds what happened at Santini's.  There was a sharp ding that broke them from their thoughts and then the doors opened.  They were greeted by Julia, Ari's nurse, and she had a huge smile on her face.  Paulo looked at Luca "you go first".  You didn't have to tell him twice.  He and Julia talked as they walked to Ari's room.  "I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised" she says winking at him.  What he saw when he walked in relieved all of his angst, worry and grief in one vision...Ari was sitting up in bed...eating!  Luca looked back at Julia who motioned him to go in and then back at Ari.  He let out a huge sigh before he walked in and he was greeted with that 100 watt smile he'd become accustom to.  "Luca!" she smiled.  He walked over to her, grabbed her face and kissed her like no tomorrow.  She tasted like maple syrup from her oatmeal.  She tasted like heaven.  A small moan escaped her lips.  "If you weren't injured I would take you right here in this bed" he murmured against her lips.  She let out a little giggle then hissed.  "I'm sorry" he said concerned.  "It's okay.  It felt good to laugh" she said smiling and patting at the bed.  He moved her tray aside and sat down gently on the bed.  She looked at her man, reaching for his cheek, caressing it with her thumb.  "Baby did you sleep last night at all?" she asked in worried tone.  He shook his head.  "It was hard sleeping in a bed without you" he said honestly.  "How about you?" he asked.  "Me?  I slept like a rock!  I had a morphine pump!" she said holding up what looked like a buzzer attached to her bed.  "I remember Julia coming in around 1 this morning telling me they were going to wean me off of it so I could be coherent when you got here.  Honestly pain pills should do it, provided I don't try to move around too much."  She seemed happy and I was glad.

They continued to talk about everything other than what happened.  He would let her ease into that and talk about it at her own pace.  Their conversation was interrupted by a Dr. Morgan, the ICU doctor.  "Good morning Ms. Lucchese and you must be Mr. Constanti, I'm Dr. Morgan.  I just need to check the incision, etc this morning and then we can talk, okay?"  Luca nodded and started to leave.  "You may stay if you would like" the doctor said.  He looked at Ari and she had pleading in her eyes.  He stepped back towards the bed and the doctor called for Julia and pulled the curtain closed.  He shined a light in her eyes, checking her pupils, then got out his stethoscope and listened to her heart.  "Good and strong" he commented with a smile.  "I think we can remove the leads now" he said nodding towards Julia who moved Ari's gown back and started to remove the 4 white squares from her chest and two from her sides.  "Now, let's see this battle wound of your's, young lady" he said pulling the sheet up to her hip and placing a small white blanket over her chest, providing her as much coverage and maintaining her modesty to prevent embarrassment.  He pulled her gown away from her side exposing a 14cm long stapled incision and in the middle of that incision was the hole, stitched not stapled,  from Morelli's bullet.  Luca tried to not make any facial expression but he balled his fists in both hands and his nails were digging into the flesh.  "Ms. Ari we can safely say that you are responding nicely to the antibiotics, the incision and bullet wound look better than I expected so I will begin the paperwork for you to be moved to a private room.  How does that sound?" he asked looking brightly at her.  "Fantastic!  Thank you doctor!" she said smiling.  "Yes, thank you doctor, for everything" Luca said extending a hand.  He and the doctor shook hands and he left the room writing on his clipboard.  Ari and Luca looked at each other smiling.  Today would be a good day.
