The Moment I Knew

"And the hours pass by, now I just wanna be alone, but your close friends always seem to know when there's something really wrong, so they follow me down the hall. And there in the bathroom, I try not to fall apart, and the sinking feeling starts, as I say hopelessly, 'He said he'd be here.' "

"How old are you now?!"

"Please leave."

"How old are you now?!"

"You guys already kn-"

"How old are you Nicholas!? How old are you no-"

"I'm NINETEEN, OKAY?! Let me sleep. Please." I'm not a morning person. Never was, and never ever will be. It's my birthday. Yay? Chaz and mom were crowded around my bed, and I quickly hopped up when the smell of bacon wafted around my nose. Chaz rolled her eyes and handed me a plate with eggs, bacon, and confetti pancakes. I love food. What on earth would I do without it?

"Aww. Thanks guys. Where's dad?"

"Who knows? He said he has a business leave or something." She put quotations around business, and I gave her a suspicious look. Parents these days.

Mom handed me a gift bag as I got up from bed and stretched.

"Here you go honey. Happy birthday. I was gonna wait 'til tonight, but I mean, how are you gonna get to school?" She gave me that one of a kind mom smile as my eyes widened. Did she really give me a bus pass? She did not just get me a car. I opened up the bag to find two Bring me The Horizon shirts, and a bunch of band bracelets. Oh! And a pair of car keys.

"Your gift is in the garage. You're welcome. And let me tell you, you are getting a job because I am not giving you gas money every week." I grabbed a piece of bacon and Chaz's hand as I ran down the steps and down to the garage door.

"NO WAY. NO MOTHERFUCKING WAY." Chaz gave me a triumphant smile as I started jumping up and down like a maniac.

"Oh my Carlile! You see this? This is a Kia Forte. A FREAKING KIA." I just got up and already I just had the best birthday ever! You don't know how badly I wanted a Kia. They're flipping awesome! I got in the car and turned on the engine in awe. It even told you the temperature on the dashboard! I started to squeal like a dying pig as I rubbed my seats in a sexual manner. I'm sorry, but knit and woven fabric is awesome. My new car smell is even better. I turned the car off and threw the keys at Chaz as I closed the door.

"We're going on a road trip ASAP." I laughed at her, shaking my head.

"Fine by me. But first, I gotta find a job. Tomorrow after school I'll go job hunting. I never really had anything that I wanted to buy and I didn't have the money for it, so I never even bothered to get a job. Ever since I saved up all my money from my last job, I never ran out. Hot Topic isn't hiring, so I have to go to the second best thing; Starbucks."

Last year I ran away with the circus for a month or two. Not really 'ran away' since I had my parent's permission. I worked as the magician's lovely assistant and I got tips for standing by him all day and night. It was so worth it! I came home with a thousand dollars, and a pair of clown shoes. That definitely should be on someone's bucket list. I walked inside and into my room, finishing my breakfast.

I scarfed it down in five minutes as I looked through my closet for something to wear. My high waisted skirt and a black blouse, with my red Vans. I need to go shoe shopping. Damn. Mom is right. I DO need a job. Chaz sat on my bed while I took a shower and brushed my teeth. I was feeling a bit giddy this morning so I put on a little makeup and curled my hair. I grabbed my bag and ran downstairs in the kitchen with Chaz trailing behind me.
