I could smell the scent of pancakes from the kitchen as I began to make my way down the stairs. Even though I couldn't hear his footsteps I could now recognize that Walker was following me because of the cold presence he gave off.
Didn't he remember what I told him yesterday?!
I kept walking down the stairs and into the kitchen though. Really hoping he would just disappear.
"Audrey, glad to see your awake," my mother smiled softly at me from the kitchen as she flipped another pancake.
I simply nodded my head in response.
There was another person besides my mother in the kitchen. Will was sitting on one of the stools at the kitchen counter as he was eating his own pancakes.
His hair was in a perfect mess as usual and a faint smile was on his lips. He wore a white hoodie and light blue jeans.
If I was the darkness he was the light.
Will upon seeing me smiled in my direction.
I ignored him though and grabbed myself a plate of pancakes so my mom wouldn't yell at me that I wasn't eating.
"I don't know Audrey, your family doesn't seem that bad," I suddenly tensed up and my eyes widened in horror.
Walker was standing in between my mother and my brother, staring at the pancakes on the counter with a hungry look in his eyes.
I waited for my family to scream in terror but it never came. It was like they couldn't hear or see him.
"Audrey, what's wrong? Your eyes suddenly widened," Will looked at me in concern as he stopped eating his pancakes.
Observant as always.
"Oh, sorry..." I already had an excuse ready and began to stand up, throwing my bag over my shoulders.
"I just remembered that my bus driver said she was coming five minutes earlier.""You know you can still ride with me right?" Will asked softly.
I shook my head, "I'm fine." I then hurriedly left the house.
I breathed in some fresh air and let out a breath. I was out of my house but I still had to face school.
I could never be free.
"Hey, why'd you run out of there so fast?" As I thought, Walker had followed me out here. He was staring down at his feet a sad look in his eyes, "Those pancakes looked delicious...." He muttered softly.
"How did they not see you?" I turned to him, ignoring his question.
He looked at me and quickly smiled, "Ghosts can choose who they want to see them. It comes in handy quite a lot."
That made since.
"I guess now your going to follow me to school right?" I looked at him before starting to walk down the street to my bus stop.
I could sense him following behind me,
"Naturally."I shook my head softly and stood against the stop sign. Now I have to wait an extra five minutes.
"Hey Walter?" I said softly and he looked up in slight surprise. "Do you really not remember anything from the time you were alive?"
His gaze turned sad and he nodded softly, "Yeah, all I remember is that my name is Walker and that I died last year at age fifteen."
So he was the same age as I was now.
"Do you know if you'll ever get your memories back?"
He shook his head softly, "I don't know, it's not like I can ask anyone."
"Huh?" I raised my eyebrows in slight confusion.
"There are no other ghosts here, I'm the only one."
