CHAPTER THREE

The sound of my name being screamed in such an agonized way makes my heart race. I'm on my feet before I realize it. I reach towards the door and try to open it but its locked. "Alex!" I screamed back hoping that somehow whatever he was experiencing would stop happening. "Alex!" I started banging my fists against the door. How could it be locked from the outside?
I sat back on the bed, face in my hands. Tears of fear and frustration start rolling down my cheeks. "I'm sorry this is happening to us, Alex..." I whispered. The light summer breeze from the window comforts me.
It's then that it finally hits me. The window!
I put my ear against the wall where Alex's room is. I can hear him but his voice is muffled like he has something covering his mouth. When I hear them in there with him I stop breathing so I don't miss anything.
"Keep this little shit quiet. He'll draw all them things here." I could tell by the voice it was Jack who spoke. "I'm going to go check on our little princess."
"No. I stayed with him last time. Let me go check on her." It was Hank.

Now was my only chance. I pushed the window up and kicked out the screen.
I could hear one of them making their way to the door.
'Damn it, Emma. Hurry up!' I told myself. I crawled out the window and stood on the ledge. It was too far to drop. I looked around for another way and my eyes went to the gutter two feet above my head.
I didn't really know if I jumped whether my hands would reach it or not but as the bedroom door opened with a bang I jumped. My hands found the gutter and it creaked, startled by the sudden weight.
"Where the fuck!?" He yelled from the bedroom.

I started pulling myself, struggling because of my poor upper body strength.

The falling sensation hits me just before my head slams against the siding under the window I climbed out of. My ears are ringing as the blood rushes to my head. Hank is pulling me back inside the house by my foot.
When I'm back inside the room there is two of everything. The noises are distorted.
He stands me up and I feel something cold against my throat. "What were you thinking just now? Did you really think you could leave?" He asked. I felt his hair on my ear.
"You said you'd let us go after I gave you what you wanted." I whispered feeling the serrated edge move when my throat did.
"Well we had a change of plan. We like you and we want to keep you. The only problem is the kid's getting to be a handful." Hank kissed my cheek. "He needs to be disposed of."
"No." I whispered. Silent tears spilled down my face. "Don't hurt him. Let him leave. Let him go back."
"We can't do that. We can't have him bringing the rest of your people after us. I'm sure you can understand." He said. "Come on in, Jack."
Jack walked into the room pushing Alex. The was my gun. Pointed right at the side of Alex's head.
"No. Don't do this please." I begged Jack hoping maybe he was different from Hank...more sympathetic perhaps.
"Emma." Alex said. "What did they do?"
"I'm sorry, Alex. I'm so sorry." I said ignoring his question.

I felt Hank tense behind me. "Jack. Their people, they are here. They're at this house."
I suddenly felt my cowardice leave me. Maybe I can get Alex and I out of here. "Help! We're here! Dad! They're trying to k--!" Hank covered my moth and pushed the knife against my throat harder. "Shut the fuck up." He growled angrily into my ear.
He was too late to react though. My father heard me. He was yelling our names. I heard Hank yell in anger and then his fist made contact with my temple and I dropped to the ground. The last things saw before losing consciousness was Alex's eyes widening and the shot of the gun as he fell to the ground.
I whispered his name as I fell into the darkness. 'Im sorry. It's my fault and I'm sorry.' I whispered but the words wouldn't leave my head. The words would only bounce around inside. Forever as an unheard apology.

When I woke up I wasn't in the bedroom of the house in town. I was in the familiar bed that I stayed in since the apocalypse. Had all of that just have been some nightmare. Could I have ever have even left for the supply run yet? It didn't feel right. To me it felt all to strange to be real.
I sat up and looked around me. My father was there. He was asleep in a lawn chair next to me. "Dad?" I asked quietly. I didn't really want to wake him but I needed to know now.
He jumped at the sound if my voice. "Emma!" He came over to my bed and grabbed me in a hug. "I'm so sorry that happened."
So it was real. "What happened to Alex? Is he okay? Did you bring him back too?"
When the color in my father's face immediately drained I knew something was wrong.
My father, who was the only person I could connect with would never lie to me. He couldn't lie to me if he tried. We knew each other to well.
Sadness filled his face and I knew the worst was coming. "Alex is dead, Emma."

I cried for a few hours but there was one more thing I wanted to ask him before I cried myself to sleep. "What about the men?" I asked.
"Shirley killed the one with the gun, but the other got away. I'm sorry that happened to you, Emma." He said.
"I think I'm just going to go back to sleep now..." I said. My voice came out flat and emotionless. I knew this nightmare wasn't over. Hank would want revenge. Revenge for his partner and revenge for his runaway pet. I knew this wouldn't be the last time I saw Hank, but next time... Next time I'll be ready. I'll be ready and I will get revenge for Alex. Alex won't die and have his murderer live. That's not happening.
