Chapter Sixteen
I woke up to his loud snores. I glared at him from across the room. "Shut up..." I whined sleepily. In the silence the snores only became louder. I reached my hand up over the table in front of me searching for something I could throw. My hand stopped when it reached something. I pulled it down and looked at it. It was a hardback bible. I smirked down at the book and back over to his sleeping figure. I weighed it in my hands for a moment and finally threw it in his direction as hard as I could.
THUD.
The bible had hit him. I saw it hit him in the nose and jaw. I began to laugh and his snores suddenly ceased. He groaned loudly and pushed the book off his face. He turned towards my laughter, wearing a dark scowl.
I shrugged. "You snore really loud."
He looked angry but I was done talking about it. I turned my attention back to the pouring rain. How long had it been raining now? It felt like days but time was so warped now.
I could hear the floor groan as he moved. What was he doing? I turned to look and the bridge of my nose brushed against the rough fabric of jeans. "Uh, can you...move away." I said leaning away to look up.
He was staring down at me with hard blue eyes.
I glared up at him like we were having a staring contest. He blinked first. "What?" I asked loudly.
"Stop talking for a second. I'm trying to figure something out." He said, still staring at me.
I angrily turned towards the rain and unconsciously began to tap the toe of my sneakers on the wood floor. It was a bad habit I'd developed when I was young. It always happened when I was angry, uncomfortable, frustrated, or all of the above.
After a few minutes I exploded again. I quickly rose to my feet and crossed my arms in front of him. "What. The. Hell. Do. You. Want." I was clenching my fists and gritting my teeth.
"Fine. If you won't let me figure it out myself you tell me. Who are you?" He said.
"What? My name is Emma... Is that all?"
He sighed loudly. "No. What kind of person are you? I can't figure you out and it's driving me nuts."
I shrugged. "How am I supposed to know?"
"Just tell me!"
I was getting mad again. "Tell you what? Tell you I'm fucking crazy? Tell you that I'm haunted by a man who raped me four years ago? That I watched everyone I cared for killed? What the fuck do you want to know?"
His jaw was hanging open. "Oh."
I don't know what but that little word was that last straw for me. "Oh? Oh! That's it? Oh? That's all you have to say? You wanted to know well there it is!" I paused for a second struggling for more to throw at him. "And you know what....fuck you! I don't need your help."
I stomped out of the cabin without my shoes or jacket. The rain fell on me like freezing shards of glass. I didn't care though. All I cared about was getting out of there. This is why I didn't want to get involved with this group. Goddamn prying assholes! They've always got to know everything about you!
After a few more steps through the flooded ground I just collapsed. I dropped to my knees, soaking my pants completely in the process. Every part of me was shivering. I felt the urge to cry. Everything that I'd been trying to ignore I just brought them all back. I brought them all back. Alex, mom, dad, Ally, even Shirley... Then I remembered every unwanted detail of what Hank and Jack did. I wanted to cry so badly then but I didn't dare cry in front of the enemy. They couldn't see how much they broke me.
