CHAPTER SIX
Two weeks went by and she never came back. I knew it was my fault. My father went back to the shell he was after my mother died. I can't believe I am only realizing it now. My father had finally found his link to the person he used to be but then I took it away. I wasn't sure if he'd loved Shirley completely but he was close. My mother always used to talk about how easily he'd fallen for her. A fool for love...that's what she called him.
Our meal times were awkward and uncomfortable. Silence always filled the room and most times I felt like it was thick enough to crush me. I lost my father again. The depression took him back into it's greedy clutches.
I was in the kitchen when he surprised me. My father was looking in my direction but his eyes were distant.
"Dad?" I asked. "Is everything okay?"
He nodded slowly. "Do you still have that bow I gave you?" He asked.
I furrowed my brow in confusion. "Yeah...why?"
"We haven't hunted since last week." He said.
"Oh." I was stunned. Was my father losing it? We haven't hunted since I was younger.
"Let's get going before your mom gets home. I want to surprise her with a deer." He said.
I wanted to cry. He was even further gone from me then before. "Daddy." I said. I threw my arms around him. He can't leave me anymore. "Don't disappear..." I whispered.
He patted my head. "Let's head out, kiddo."
I quickly wiped the eyes that threatened to spill with tears. "O-okay dad...let me get my bow and we can hunt..."
I went to the closet and pulled out the bow and sheath of arrows that were mine. I slung the sheath over my shoulder an got my father's out for him. "Let's go."
The walk there took us about forty five minutes. When we got there I could see flashes of my old father in the eyes of the new one. He acted as if this was normal, like we'd planned this trip.
The woods were quiet but it was around noon so the animals aren't around. It wasn't like I thought they would though...my father's heavy tread through the woods would scare everything away. I stopped walking and turned to my dad. Wait here. I think I saw something and I want to tell mom that I shot it." My voice broke midway through my request but my father didn't hear it.
He began to smile. "Okay, kiddo, she'll be proud."
I went in the direction I said I'd saw something. I didn't stop until I knew I was far enough away for him not to hear me. The tears streamed down my face and I just stood there. I was losing everything...everyone I cared for. My legs gave away under me and I fell to the ground. The choking sounds started as I cried harder. "What am I going to do? How can I bring him back?"
After five minutes I stood up and wiped my face clear. I picked up my bow and began to walk back, but my walked picked up to a run when I heard my father. He was in trouble.
