CHAPTER ONE

It's been a week since everyone in the world started going insane; crazy with some sort of worldwide infection. I don't exactly know what's going on but I know that this isn't a game. My group and I need to fight like today is our last day. Constantly on our toes, watching each others backs.
Our small group consists of five people. My father is our leader, his name is Greg. Next in command is Shirley, she's middle aged but she's taken good care of herself so she's fit and intuitive. The other two and I are what my father and Shirley like to call kids. I'm the oldest of the "kids" and I'm twenty-three. The others really are kids; the other two are twins who are thirteen.
The good thing about our group is that we all know our place in the group. We know what needs done everyday in order for our group to function.
An example would be now for instance. Alex, one of the twins, and I are going on a quick supply run. The small town our base is located in didn't have much of a population before the world went to shit now it's more deserted than Mars. That's part of the reason they assign the twins to go with me. Alex's sister Allie is smarter but he is more into fighting and paying attention to what's going on around him. If I had to choose the better choice for who to do runs with I'd choose him.

As we walk down the deserted dirt road they labeled Main Street in this town Alex scuffs his shoes in the dirt kicking up swirls of dust around our feet.
A sound in a house to my left alerts me. I put a hand in front of Alex's chest to stop him from walking. He looks up at me and I glance at the house and back to him. "I heard something in that house over there. Cover me?" I ask.
He looks around us and back at me giving me a quick nod.

I hold the gun I was given, ready to shoot at a moments notice. I didn't like the gun. It wasn't that I couldn't use it, I could and well at that. I was just more comfortable with a standard bow and sheath of arrows.
A standard bow was the first weapon I ever learned to use. When I was eight and my dad had gotten laid off we had a lot of spare time. He decided to put all that time to good use. He taught me to hunt first. After I'd successfully mastered that he then taught me to skin animals after I shot them.
When I turned fourteen our hunting trips became scarce due to my father getting a job and my schoolwork getting harder. By the time I was fifteen the trips stopped all together... My father and I just got caught up in life to have our quality bonding trips anymore. If I had to say one thing I missed from my past that would be it.
Father became distant after my mothers death when I was fifteen. It's like he fell into a well of depression and could climb his way back out. After a few years I just gave up trying to bring my old father back to me. I accepted that he was really gone.

The house should be easy for me to scout out since its only got one story. Alex and I can scavenge for supplies after I eliminate any threat that might be present.
The house's layout is simple. When you walk in there is a large living room with an open kitchen next to it. When I look they are both clear.
I preceded to check the bathroom and what looked like a kids room. Both were clear.
I reached the last room with my gun ready. The door was shut with a blood trail on the carpet leading to or coming from it. I pressed my ear to the door. I could only hear the hum of what sounded like a radio station with no signal or in this case no broadcast.
I knew that what I was hearing could only be a battery powered radio. The electricity had failed the fifth day of the infection.
I slowly turned the doorknob. The room was small but clearly a parent's bedroom. I pushed the door the rest of the way with my foot and my gun outstretched in front of me.

The first thing about the room that I noticed was the blood. The bed and floor was covered but there was no one there. I opened the window and looked at Alex, who was watching the streets. "All clear, scout!" I yelled only loud enough for him to hear.
He jerked his head in my direction and smiled, giving me a thumbs up. I smiled back and ducked my head back inside the room. I found the radio on top of the dresser. The static was depressing, it screamed of there being no hope left in this word.
I opened the drawers of the dresser, they were filled with woman's clothes. I assumed she'd been a single mother or the child had two mothers... It could've been either.

When Alex and I first started scavenging I came up with a game. The game was to figure out who had originally lived in the house. Our game was sort of weird but if it made him happy to play it then I was glad to keep going.
I skipped to the bedside table the only thing in there was a pregnancy test box and a box of condoms beside it. I mentally scratched off the two mothers idea. I vaguely wondered if the test was positive and if it was had it been from the child who had resided in the second bedroom or a whole different child completely?
I sighed shutting the drawer and moved into the bathroom to find Alex. "I think it was just this mom and little girl. He said handing me a photo frame containing a picture of a smiling girl who looked to be about my age with a little girl who looked to be five or six grinning from ear to ear showing her missing teeth.
"Yeah that's what I thought too. Find anything interesting?" I asked.
He shrugged, "Nothing special. How about you?"
"Nothing but an alarming amount of blood in the moms bedroom."
"Do you think it had anything to do with that positive test on the counter?" He said with a disgusted face.
I looked to where he was pointing and sure enough there was a pregnancy test. "Ew, you didn't touch it, did you?" I asked.
"Uh, no. Gross, Emma. I'm old enough to know what that is."
I looked at the test and then the floor leading to the bedroom. My stomach began to turn. Did that girl have a miscarriage...? I put my hand over my mouth as I felt my lunch crawling back up to make a reappearance. I leaned over the tub because the path to the toilet and sink was blocked by Alex.
I walked out of the house and sat on the front steps with my head resting on my knees. My head was spinning.
Five minutes later Alex came out and sat beside me on the stairs. "Are you alright?" Concern was clear in his voice. I straightened up and put my arm around his shoulders. "Yeah, kid I'm fine. Thanks for checking on me though. I appreciate it."
For some reason he blushed. "Have you ever considered liking a younger guy?" He asked, his voice full of seriousness.
I raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean exactly?"
"Okay, hypothetical situation. Say I had a crush on you would you ever like me back?" He said looking intensely down at his dirty nikes..
"Aww, Alex. That's so sweet." I said squeezing his shoulders with my arm.
Blush covered his cheeks again. "Hey, I said hypothetical!"
I smiled and ruffled his shaggy blond hair. "Hypothetical, huh?"
"Yes, completely." He said.
"Well since its hypothetical... I would tell you that you can do way better."
"What if your wrong and I said I loved you?" He blushed again. "Don't forget... Hypothetical."
I sighed because I knew this conversation was in fact not a hypothetical. "Well hypothetical Alex, keep in mind that I am twenty-three. I am TEN years older than you. I was already ten when you were still a fetus." I said grinning.
"I'm going to pretend you didn't just call me that and what if that doesn't bother me?"
"What's wrong with me saying you were a fetus?" I laughed. "You were."
"Don't change the subject. I asked you something."
"Alex, I'm sorry but I could never have romantic feelings for a little boy. If I were five years older I could be your mom. Doesn't that creep you out?"
"No, nothing you do creeps me out. You're perfect."
I laughed again. I felt bad for giving Alex his first rejection. "Someday when the world is okay again you're going to meet a beautiful girl your age and fall in love for real. Until then don't worry about love just worry about survival." I stood up and bent over him and kissed him on the cheek. "Come on kiddo, we've got supplies to scavenge."
