CHAPTER TEN
I watched Beck as he slept. Occasionally he would kick his legs and quietly bark. I began to wonder how the little guy had survived this long. It's been nearly two months since this virus came to be. I looked at the small dog on my lap and realized something. Beck couldn't be more than a few months old.
"This would be a terrible world to be born into..." I whispered, trying not to wake him up. Beck stirred at my voice. I ran my hand over his fur. "Sorry buddy..." His hair was dirty from living outside.
I scratched my neck at looked down at him. "You're dirty, Beck... How does a bath sound? I can't have my little buddy filthy..." I stared down at him for a minute trying to figure out how I'd give him a bath. The water didn't work and I couldn't use my own. We need that to drink. I got up and held Beck in my arms.
"I think I have an idea...lets go check for soap in the bathroom." I started walking and when I was halfway down the hall I turned around. "My grandma told me about a flea remedy once, Beck." I looked down to see him with his head held up looking at me. "I'm not saying you have fleas I just want to be sure... I can't have the little vermin eating you alive..." Slowly a thought dawned on me. "You have it harder than me, huh? You got the things outside and fleas... Don't worry...they won't ever get to you."
I turned around and headed back towards the kitchen. I looked in the cupboards and in the pantry but there was no soap. I moved down to the cupboard under the sink and opened it. I smiled when I saw the soap. The soap was blue and half filled.
"It our lucky day, Beck. Bath time." I said.
I looked around outback making sure the coast was clear. The backyard was quiet as it was before. I went over to the rain filled baby pool and dragged it closer to the door. I looked at Beck and put him in the water. When he first touched the water he squirmed his legs trying to escape his bath.
"Don't worry, Beck, it's not going to hurt you. I know it's cold but it's all we have." He looked at me and he looked sad. "We'll make it fast and then we can eat..." His ears perked up at eat.
I started to lower him into the water again. He licked the water and looked at me. I let go and he jumped out and trudged over to the shed. I was about to go get him when I saw him coming back with something green in his mouth.
As he drew nearer I could see it was a ball. I smiled and held my hand out. He dropped it at my feet and looked at me expectantly. I sighed and threw the little ball. It went to the other end of the yard, Beck followed barking happily. He brought it back.
"We can't play this out here. You're too loud." I said taking the ball and putting it in my pocket. "Bath, food, and after that we can play."
He jumped into the pool happily this time spraying me with water. I shook my head and pulled water on him to dampen all of his fur.
When I started to rub soap on his head he licked my face. I laughed and wiped it off with my sleeve. "You, sir, have stinky breath."
Finally it was time to rinse the soap off. He would shake every so often spraying me with soap and water. "You're a brat." I finished washing off the soap and lifted him out of the pool. "Let's dry you off then we can eat." I took him into the house and shut the door behind me. I picked up a towel out of the bathroom and wrapped him in it. I set him on my small bed and told him to wait.
The cans of food in the pantry were lined in front of me. I grabbed the last beef stew for Beck and pineapple for myself.
Beck barked happily when I re-entered my room. "I've got us food. You're getting beef stew again. I set the pineapples down on the desk while I tipped his food into a glass bowl. He jumped of the bed and stood up on two feet trying to see over the desk but his shortness didn't even let him see past the bottom drawer.
"Alrighty, boy, here's your food." I said putting it on the floor. He immediately started to eat. I watched him for a while before deciding to begin my own.
An hour after we'd finished our meal and played ball I got an idea. "Hey, Beck, what do you think about us moving to someplace else? I have a few memories here that I want behind me... We can take your ball." At the word ball Beck lifted his ears. "We could hunt too. I bet you'd be a good hunting dog. You're a Shepard dog so it's in your blood." I sat down on the ground next to him. He turned his large amber eyes on my and put his chin on my knee and whined. "You don't need to be scared Beck... I'll keep you safe."
