CHAPTER ELEVEN
I threw everything I could into two bookbags I'd found in the closet upstairs. First to go in the bag were the remaining twenty or so cans of food, next was an extra set of clothing, a blanket, the soap, and the waters. Combined all of that filled up the first bag and half the second. To fill the rest of the second I grabbed the three handguns and their magazines plus all the extra ammo. Next I took the two flashlights and the two extra packets of batteries we'd scavenged over the last month.
When I reached forward to pick up the last pack o batteries my the figurative knife in my heart twisted itself a little more. A memory. A memory of a happy time during all of the drama and horror of the new world we lived in. The memory was with my sidekick and secret admirer...Alex.

The summer heat beat down on Alex and I as we walked along the dirt road. This was our first scavenge trip.
"It soooo hot!" Alex complained dragging his feet in the dirt loosening stones.
I chuckled quietly. "You're gonna need to get used to it, friend. You might have a lot of hot adventures in your future."
He glanced at me out of the corner of his eye with a smirk. "That's what she said."
For a minute I was confused. "What?"
"Uh, it's a joke." He said. "All the guys at school usually say that after a girl says something that is close to doing "it"."
I laughed before I could stop myself. "Did you just refer to what I think you did?"
"Yeah...you know. It starts with an "s"."
I shook my head at the ground. "If you can't even say the word sex then you have no business giving me the 'that's what she said' line."
Alex wrinkled his nose when I'd said sex causing me to laugh out again.
"A twelve year old shouldn't even know about sex yet anyway." I said.
"I'm thirteen, not twelve." He corrected.
"Oh, yes of course. Being thirteen makes such a big difference." I shook my head again to go with my clear sarcasm.
"It does make a difference!" He almost yelled to defend himself.
"Alright, sure it does. A thirteen year old shouldn't even know either. To make things more specific I don't think you should know till your eighteen and then you shouldn't "do it" until your married." I reached up and pulled my hair into a ponytail as I walked.
Soon the only sound was our feet on the dirt. I assumed our conversation was over and turned my attention to the road coming up on our right that lead to the house we were scavenging.
When Alex spoke again it made me jump slightly because my mind had traveled elsewhere. "Have you?" He asked.
I looked at the sun and then to the road again. "Have I what?" I asked carelessly.
"You know..." He said.
I furrowed my brow. "Oh, are you still talking about sex?" I looked over at him.
"Yeah that." He said.
"If I had I wouldn't tell you. It's kinda personal, Alex. I also wouldn't tell you because I don't want your image of me to go bad. As far as your concerned I'm just a friend or an older sister."
