My eyes shot open when I heard the floorboards creek. My room was pitch black, only the moonlight seeping in through the cut in the curtains provided a tint of light. The floor creaked again, outside my door. My heart beat so fast in my chest. Memories firing at me like bullets I couldn't miss, piercing my body.
I heard the door knob click, I grabbed my teddy and opened the zip on the bottom. My fingers wrapped around the handle and I pulled it out holding it to my chest. I took a breath in and counted down from ten to one. The door opened and I heard footsteps. Three from the door to my bed.
Three.
Two.
One.
I shop up, swinging my arm to the direction of the footsteps.
"Stop or I'll shoot!" I yelled.
"Dawn?".
With my hand still out, I reached out with the other one to switch on my lamp. I looked at Keith's shocked face. I watched him wide eyed, my heart still beating frantically in my chest.
"Dawn, why are you holding a gun?" he asked. I lowered the gun and Keith stepped forward. Slowly and cautiously. Great he thinks I'm crazy.
"What are you doing here?" I asked quietly. "Your mom called me after you weren't replying to her messages, she told me she left a key in the plant pot to come and see if you're okay" he explained. I bit my lip, tears blurring my vision.
"Dawn why do you have a gun?", I opened my eyes but no words came out. I put the gun down beside me and covered my eyes as tears spilled freely down my face. I felt the bed dip and then I was pulled onto Keith's lap, he wrapped his arms around me and held me as I sobbed.
"What's wrong Spunky? Tell me what's been going on?" he whispered. I shook my head, "I...Keith I can't" I sobbed. He pulled my hands away and grabbed my face in his palms, forcing me to look into his eyes.
"I've seen you Dawn, I've seen you scratch the inside of your wrist when I asked you about your past, I've seen how you react when someone grabs you, you've got me so wound up Dawn, just please tell me what's wrong, what happened to you, you can trust me, please Dawn".
My tears stopped and I just shut down in a way. A defense mechanism, I spaced out and lost myself inside me. I felt Keith rub my face, "Dawn stay with me, come on baby snap out of it, come back to me". I followed his words until I could see him clearly again.
"Keith" I whispered searching his eyes, I felt like I was drowning in his ocean. I didn't want to come up for air, I just wanted to drown. "That's good baby, come back to me, focus on my voice", I managed to snap back to reality. It took me faster than usually when I lost it, Keith kissed my forehead and I took a deep breath in, letting my heart calm down.
"My mom died when I was 13" he began, I looked at him and shook my head, "Keith yo-".
"She had cancer and we couldn't afford to pay for her treatment, my father had alcohol issues and never gave a shit about anything, I tried to help as much as I could but I couldn't save her, she was beautiful Dawn, she had these green eyes, like yours and her hair was always shiny, when she smiled everyone did, when she died I was alone. My brother left me and my father vanished, my grandmother took care of me until she passed 3 years ago. I was alone again, but I pulled through because of someone".
He opened up to me, he trusted me enough to tell me about his past. I trusted Keith too, it's only fair. I can't have him worrying about me like the rest of them. He deserved the truth.
