Chapter 1:
I was grinning a little too much as I approached the front door of our house. The trick-or-treaters waiting impatiently for their candy stood on the other side of the glass door. The lights flickered, there was a light thud behind me, more flickering, and then the lights were normal again. When I reached the door, the lights turned off all of a sudden. I looked behind me before reaching for the doorknob. Just as I was about to turn it, a pair of firm hands grabbed me right above my elbows. Although I knew it was coming, it scared me nonetheless. I fought to keep myself from laughing as a nose lightly brushed against my shoulder, up my neck, and all the way to my jawline, smelling me. I was wriggling my arms, but other than that my body stayed completely still. I forced myself to look scared, when really I was smiling on the inside. I squeezed my eyes shut as Conner's mouth chewed off the fake piece of skin on my neck. I screamed so that the kids could hear me, but the nearby houses wouldn't be bothered. I let my body go slightly limp as fake blood spewed out of my fake wound. The kids were scared, but they were still at the front porch. He pushed me lightly to the other room where they couldn't see us, but I threw myself onto the couch to make it seem that he pushed me harder. Conner walked slowly toward me. His tattered plaid button-up shirt I had burned for him was draped over his muscly physique. He wore ripped up jeans and burnt sneakers courtesy of me. Fake blood was smeared all over his mouth and angular jaw. More was splattered all over his body, and it dripped off of his hands. With a little black makeup, his eyes appeared more sunken in as well as his cheeks. His eyes were white, and they were fixed on me. I screamed and groaned and moaned for about ten seconds. When I stopped, I signaled Bri, who had been waiting on the small ledge just above our front door. She would act as a zombie-fied version of me. She jumped off of the ledge and right in front of the kids, smiling so creepily that she didn't even need the makeup to intimidate someone. Just like the last 17 times, the kids ran away. I tugged my boyfriend's collar, bringing him closer to me. His hands on my waist pulled me back, and we kissed. My fingers ran up the back of his head, ruffling his already tousled hair. When his lips released mine, I looked into his whitened eyes, missing their old light blue hue. "Has anyone ever told you that your eyes are beautiful?" he said softly. "Totally, because these black holes of death bring all the boys to the yard," I replied sarcastically. He chuckled, showing his purple tinted teeth. "No, really. They're amazing. And don't think of them as black... they're more of a... cocoa brown."
"Your eyes are really creepy, but I kind of like them that way." I complimented.
"My real ones or the contacts?"
"Both." Which was technically true. Even as a zombie, he was hot. I guess all superheroes had figures that lived up to their name. Conner was Superboy, the son of Superman. Although he and his father looked strikingly similar, and they had similar powers and weaknesses and qualities, such as leadership and strength, I saw them as two completely different people. For one thing, I was dating one and the other was my boss. "No. Allison, I don't care if you guys are dating, you are messing up my masterpiece," my friend Fiona snapped. Conner and I instantly separated. He had rubbed off a lot of fake blood and makeup on me, I realized. She rushed toward me with a wet washcloth, scrubbing a little too hard. "Fi, it's late. I don't think you have to work so hard to fix our makeup after every run."
"Ali, this is my part. You guys all get to do the fun stuff! I want to contribute too. Even your neighbor gets to scare some people."
I invited my neighbor Jacob over since his dad was working late, and his mom and his sister were in another neighborhood. He usually had one of the scariest houses around on Halloween, so I felt bad about leaving him alone. Since sometimes Fiona took a little too long redoing our makeup, Jacob would get the door when we couldn't. His murderer clown mask wasn't as scary as we were, but it was enough to scare the majority of people. "Alright guys. I'm going back to my house. My folks should be back soon. This was great, by the way. THANKS FOR THE DINNER MISS WILLIAMS!" he yelled. "You're welcome sweetie!" my mother yelled back. After a goodbye from each of us, Jacob left and ran back to his house next door. "He's pretty cute. Do you have his number?" Bri asked. "Haha, are you serious?"
"What? You're lucky you have a smoking hot boyfriend okay? I've been locked up for 15 years in the Silo, okay. I'll take what I can get."
"If you think Conner's so hot, why didn't you make a move before I came along?"
"Yeah, Bri why didn't you?" Conner agreed.
"Because that's just weird, okay?! We grew up together and I don't think about you that way, but that doesn't mean I don't think you're... you know..."
"Hot? Sexy? Good-looking?"
"Shut up," Bri scoffed. Conner stood up and gave Bri a noogie. I just laughed. I had never really considered the fact that Conner and Bri were just friends, or the possibility of Conner cheating on me with her. We looked exactly the same, but he treated us like completely different people, which is what I loved about him. With him, he knew instantly who was who. And there was no comparison between us. "I should get going too. It was really nice meeting you, Conner and Bri," Fiona said.
"Okay, bye Fi-"Just then the doorbell rang. Conner and Bri rushed Fiona out the back door, while I ran to go see who it could be. It was almost 11. Everyone should've been home by now. I smiled when I saw our visitors. I held up one finger for them to wait one minute while I talked with Conner and Bri. "It's Wally and Dick (Kid Flash and Robin). Should we do it one more time?"
"I'm fine with one more time, are you?" Conner asked. Bri nodded. Bri crept into the living room and silently jumped on the ledge without getting caught. Conner super-leaped up to the ceiling fan where he would jump down from. I didn't bring the candy with me this time, assuming that they were too old to trick or treat, so they must've been here for some other reason. I reached the door, and Conner jumped down behind me and we repeated the process. Two low screams came from behind the glass. I struggled a little bit more this time, knowing that no matter strong I was, Conner was stronger. He dragged me into the other room, and I made sure to leave some fake blood on the door and scream for help. I stopped screaming, and Conner pulled me up. I locked my arms around his neck and his hands supported my weight, allowing me to piggyback him. Bri jumped down, landing on her feet. "Hey guys!" Two more screams, and then clapping. I rode Conner to the front door, which Bri had opened. He let me down gently as the boys came into my house. "That, was quite impressive," Wally said. "Now I see why you guys were all huddled in each other's rooms for the past month." Conner ran his fingers through his hair. "So why did you guys come? I don't suppose you were here for the candy."
"Yeah and why this late?" Bri added. Wally and Dick looked at each other. "We have a situation back at the Silo. We need Bri and Allison to come back in, so Conner, you might as well come too."
