Chapter 9: I am a sophomore

Bri's Dad dropped Bri, Clay, Connor, and me off at this cool mansion in New Jersey at about 7:00 in the morning. Alfred was standing on the porch waiting for us along with two women and a man. We got out of the Lamborghini, and retrieved our bags from the back, with the help of Alfred. We walked up the steps of our castle-like mansion. The porch had large white columns that held up the roof. Two of the windows had balconies, and there were two towers on either side of the porch. The inside was just as prestigious as the outside. The floors were so white you could eat off of them. Every sculpture and window polished so well, you could see your reflection in any of them. A short skywalk stretched from one side of the house to the other. We all took a seat on the couches in the living room. If I could, I would never leave the comfort of that recliner. It even massages according to Alfred. "Bri, Allison, Connor, Clay, I'd like you to meet Marian and Winston. They'll be accompanying you along with Alfred for two months in this mansion. I've rented it for two months, which means you only have two months to bring Miss Elisa Hamilton back to headquarters. Do everything you can to fit in at Neptune High, because if your cover is blown, the whole world will know, and eventually the enemy. In two months, you need to gain Elisa's trust and tell her everything, but she has to swear not to tell anyone. Convince her that if she comes to headquarters, she'll be safe," Mr. Wayne explained. "Pardon me if I interrupted," I said abruptly. "But why couldn't you just go in there and get her yourself?" "I would have, but the league agrees that we need a gentler approach, and plus, it'll be more believable if you, Bri, and Clay tell her. There's a higher chance of her actually agreeing to come to headquarters with you. In those two months, the mansion is yours. You can have a few parties if you'd like." Clay seemed to start listening. "As long as you don't give Marian, Winston, and Alfred a hard time. You guys can pick your rooms and unpack. We leave for Neptune High in an hour. We have a meeting with the principal in an hour."

We walked in the office to find a plump man in a brown suit sitting with perfect posture behind a very organized desk. "Hello, my name is Joe Howard. You may call me Principal Howard, Mr. Howard, or sir, but NEVER Joe. And let's see you are..." Principal Howard picked up a clipboard on his desk, and searched for our names. "James Ferguson, Jessica Ferguson, Kristin Peterson, and Carter Smith," he said as he firmly shook each of our hands. "According to these papers, you are part of a program in New Jersey that observes the best high schools in the state for two months each. Is that so?" We all nodded. I felt compelled to sit up straight and reply "Yes, sir" to everything Principal Howard said. "Well then, I am quite flattered that you have chosen our school. Believe me, I'm smiling on the inside," he said with a straight face. "I have no doubt that you will find our school to your liking. Enough with the chit chat. You don't want to be late for your first day. Here are your class schedules and your locker numbers. A map of the school is printed on the back. Welcome to Neptune High School."

As soon as we walked out of the door, the bell rang, and the halls were immediately crowded with students. We all found our lockers, which were actually not that far from each other. They were full lockers, unlike the half lockers in every hallway except for this one. After unpacking our things, we met up at my locker. My first class was World History. Clay and I had first period and second period together. I had third with Bri, and fourth with Connor. We all said our goodbyes, and went our separate ways. I took once last glance at the new version of Connor. I couldn't wait to see him again in fourth period. I walked down the east hall with Clay. "So where do we go, baby sis?" he asked me. "Don't call me that. And we just have to take a right and its the second door on the left." Room A27. We walked in and took separate seats. This was really boring. I could be outside fighting crime and stuff, but instead I'm undercover with my brother at a high school. "Hey." Someone's voice interrupted my thoughts. I looked up to see a tall brunette frowning down at me like I was a peasant. "That's MY seat." I was about to move, when a red haired girl sitting across from me spoke up. "Leave her alone. What has she ever done to you?" The brunette girl smirked. "She STOLE my seat. Now get out of it." Clay got out of his seat. "DON'T talk to my sister like that. Why don't YOU sit somewhere else." The brunette took once glance at him and whispered in my ear. "You're lucky your brother is so hot. This isn't over." She flipped her hair in my face and sauntered her pretty little butt to another seat. "Thanks" I mouthed to Clay. The bell rang again: the start of first period. "Sit down, people. Sit down. I'd like to introduce two new students to the classroom," a lady at the front of the room announced. She signaled for me and Clay to stand up. "This is James and Jessica Ferguson. They'll be here for the next two months at Neptune High." "Actually," I said a little too quickly. "I go by Jessie, thanks." The brunette was giving me the evil eye. I sat back down, trying not to look at her. I wasn't here to make enemies. "Today, we are going to learn about the-" Everything the teacher said after that was muffled to me. She turned the lights off and turned on the SMART board. Pictures of a war were shown. Bloody body partd and metal weapons were shown. I looked around at all of the kids in the classroom, trying to figure out who Elisa was. There was the girl from earlier: the red haired one. She didn't look like me at all. She was nice though, so maybe I could ask her after class. There was the brunette, who was filing her nails, paying no attention to the presentation. There was a boy in a red hoodie in the back listening to music. Whoever they were, they weren't doing a good job of hiding their earphones. Nobody in the class looked like me and Bri. This was going to be harder than I thought.
