Chapter 16: I am dancing
Tonight was the winter formal. After tonight, we had to head back to headquarters. Bri and I were looking at dresses provided by the mansion. There were so many dresses in so many different colors. We each decided we should choose a dress that matches our powers. I chose a simple, thin-strap, knee length red dress that faded into orange, then yellow, then orange, then red again. It reminded me of a sunset, and it matched well with the red streak in my hair. The skirt of the dress was loose, just the way I liked it. I paired the dress with a bracelet, black leather boots, and a black leather jacket. It didn't look too bad. I was talking to Bri while I waited for her to change. "Who's taking you to the dance? How come you never told me?"
"Brian, from the baseball team. He asked me about a week ago."
"Is he cute?"
"Yeah. Well, to me he is."
Bri came out of the dressing room. She looked pretty stunning as well. Her blonde wig was tied into a high ponytail, curled at the end. She wore a strapless, green dress that almost touched the floor, with little details that looked like tree branches wrapping around her dress like a spring. There were even little pink flowers on the branches. The tree branches even popped out of the dress to make straps. She wore a necklace with a silver flower, and rhinestone earrings. "I thought you didn't like pink."
"I don't. But Kristin does. And I look SO good in this."
I couldn't help but laugh. "Where's Clay?"
"He went to go pick up his date. Why? Were you going to forgive him?"
"I was thinking of doing it after the dance."
"You've been holding a grudge on him for three days now! Anyway, he told me to give you this on the night of the dance."
She handed me a small black box. I opened it, and inside was the necklace from our first day of training: the golden S. Memories from that day flooded into me. Looking back at the kiss made me laugh. I flipped it over, and 'Love you, sis' was engraved in the back of it. If this was an attempt to flatter me so I would forgive him faster, it was working.
Once Bri was ready, we walked downstairs to find Connor and Brian waiting for us. "Wow. You look... Amazing." He said to me, smiling from ear to ear. "And you look very handsome today," I said back. He wore a simple black blazer, black dress pants, and a red button up collar shirt. He was still wearing the diamond studs, and his hair was still teased up. He held out his arm, like a gentleman, and I took it sheepishly. "Why'd you have to get a jacket? You ruined it!"
"What did I ruin?"
"Now I can't give you mine when you're cold."
"Thanks, but I can bring my own jacket to wear. Although, that was very sweet of you." I kissed him on the cheek as he opened the door to the limousine.
The dance was actually kind of fun so far. It was three hours where Bri, Connor, Clay, and I didn't have to worry about work. We knew that Ellie would meet us at the end of the dance so we could bring her back to headquarters. Today was a day of relaxation. There was a DJ that played all of the most mainstream music on the little stage, and the gymnasium was decorated accordingly to the winter theme. "Alright, alright, now one of the main events of the dance is where we pick the Snow Prince and Princess. So give it up for all of our nominees!" A deafening roar of applause filled the gym. "Our nominees for Snow Prince are: James Ferguson, Jayden Marthinson, and Carter Smith. Let's give them a round of applause!" I stared at Connor, who was holding my hand. "You signed up to be a candidate? Why didn't you tell me?"
"The football team wanted me to. And I didn't want you to worry." He left to go on stage.
What if Connor and Megan won? She'd be all over him like THAT.
"And our Snow Prince is..." The DJ paused. "James Ferguson!" Everyone cheered. I had to applaud too. The DJ placed the crown on his head. "And our nominees for Snow Princess are: Megan Little, Kristin Fitzpatrick, Rose Evanwood, and Gamer Girl!" Bri went up the stage along with Megan and Rose. But no one else came up. "Gamer Girl? You out there?" Everyone looked around, judging the people they saw, and trying to guess the identity of the famous candidate. "Well I guess we'll continue. The Snow Princess of 2013 is..." The DJ paused even longer than he had before. "GAMER GIRL!" Everyone applauded, looking around for someone who was moving through the crowd. Then everyone was silent. A girl with brown hair that was done perfectly walked up to the stage. She wore a light blue high-low dress with only one strap. The bottom was white with a see-through, blue and white zebra print layer, and the sleeve was made out of the same material. The dress flowed like water behind her as she walked. She walked up to the DJ, who gave her the microphone. She turned to the audience, and it was unbelievable who was standing there. "I'm Ellie Hamilton. And I'm Gamer Girl." There were whispers in the audience, and soon, applause. It was unbelieveable. Her glasses were gone, and instead, she wore diamond earrings. The DJ placed the crown on her head. "And now, the Snow Prince and Princess will lead us in the first slow dance of the night." Ellie took my brother's hand and they walked off the stage. Everyone cleared a path for them. The music started playing, and they started dancing. I was shocked that Clay wasn't that bad of a dancer. I think it's probably because Ellie was leading in a way. Shortly after the song began, Connor walked up to me, and held out his hand. "Do you want to dance?" I took it, and soon, we were slow dancing with Ellie and Clay. Soon after, other couples joined us. Some people were being wallflowers, all of them ashamed that they didn't bring a date. Some of the wallflowers got lucky, and were asked mid-song. "Thanks for asking me to the dance. I'm having a really great time."
"No problem. I'm not having such a bad time either."
"It's just so nice to finally be able to relax, and have a night to ourselves."
"Yeah."
"But we're leaving after tonight. This is our last day as Carter and Jessie."
"Good. Now I can stop worrying about football games and focus on us. But I think I'll keep the hair."
"You should. It looks good."
In the middle of our conversation, Clay walked up to us. "May I cut in?" Connor let go of me, even though I didn't want him to, and he asked Bri to dance. Clay placed his hands on my waist, and I rested mine on his shoulders. "What do you want?"
"I see you got my little present. You like it?"
"Yeah, thanks. Did you have the necklace the whole time, during training?"
"When the whistle blew and we had to find our hiding spots, I saw something shining in the corner of my eye. I walked towards it, and it turned out to be the light reflecting off of the necklace."
"Why'd you give it to me?"
"Because it suits you. And you're going out with Superboy, over there."
"Well that was really sweet of you. Are you going to buy me presents every time I'm mad at you?"
"If it makes you feel better."
"Come on, Clay. You know that's not right. Material things can't fix everything."
"So you want me to stop?"
"No, you don't HAVE to. But don't spend too much."
"Does that mean you forgive me?"
"Well, I-"
I was about to say yes, when Bri and Connor came running up to us. "Have you guys seen Ellie?" Bri asked desperately. "No, why?" I responded. "I was dancing with her, and then Jayden asked if he could cut in, so I went to dance with my sister," Clay replied. "Well where are they now?" Clay asked. The four of us skimmed through the dance floor. Ellie and Jayden weren't there. Connor pointed towards the back door of the gym. "There!" Jayden was dragging a kicking Ellie out of the gym, with his hand over her mouth, and the other had her in a headlock.
