Leah's POV
It was the same nightmare every night. I was falling into black, and I hit the bottom. My parents and older sister were laughing and taunting me from the top. Come on, brat! Climb out! You can't even do that?! What good are you?! But tonight, it was different. I heard yelling, but it wasn't them. It was someone else. I was curled into a ball at the bottom, and I heard someone calling to me. It's okay. I'm not going to hurt you. Give me your hand, I wanna help you. Leah, give me your hand. I shot straight up, and for once, I wasn't soaked in sweat. I was calm.

"Who was he?" I thought, climbing out of bed. I looked at the clock, and saw I had a half-hour until I had to leave for school. Again. I sighed, taking an outfit out of my closet. I had just gotten it, and I wanted to wear it today. It was another peasant blouse, like I normally got. I liked them, and they hid how skinny I was. This one was white, with red embroidery on it. I put it on, with a white tank under it. I put on jeans and my only pair of shoes, a pair of red converse. It had taken several months to get them, and I was proud I had saved enough. I grabbed my backpack, and slid out the window, most likely escaping another beating from my sister, Kelly. She had won American Idol, and was in a record deal, which my parents were so proud of her for. I, on the other hand, was hated at school and at home. I wiped away the tears, shifting my backpack to a more comfortable position on my back. As I got to the school, I saw the four 'Queen Bees.' They had boyfriends in the football team, and were on cheerleading. Allyson, Abigail, Kara, and Lauren. I just barely managed to avoid them, and got to class early. I sat down, and noticed someone new in the seat beside me. He looked a little taller than me, had brownish-blond hair, and ice blue eyes. He smiled at me, and I weakly returned the smile.

"Hey." I looked up, a bit shocked.
"H- hey me?" He looked around, a half smile on his face.
"Well, yeah. I don't see anyone else around here. What's your name?" I looked up, a little nervous.
"Leah Jones. What's your name?" I said, quietly. He chuckled.
"Devan Key. We just moved here, so I jumped in here late. You ever heard of Collins Key?" I shook my head, and he chuckled again.
"Really? Well, he's my brother. He's a YouTuber, and he was a finalist on America's Got Talent." I smiled again, which I almost never did.
"That's so cool. What did he do on the show?" He grinned at me, showing me a picture on his phone. It was an older boy, holding a gold watch, grinning.
"Magic. That was my favorite trick that he did. He took a $250,000 gold watch, and two cheap ones. He told two of the judges to choose two of the three bags that the three watches were in, and the two they chose, he took a sledgehammer and smashed the watches." I gasped, nearly laughing.
"Did he smash the gold watch?" He shook his head.
"Naw. There was also the time he used Twitter to predict the future." That time, I did laugh, which surprised even me. I never laughed anymore, and he smiled even wider.

Devan's POV
I wasn't sure how, but when Leah laughed, l could tell she didn't laugh much. Then, another girl came up to us.

"Hey, Leah. Who's this? 'Friend' of yours?" I could hear the sarcasm dripping from her voice as she said that.
"Hey Allyson." Leah turned back to her desk, pulling her books out.
"Yeah, I'm a friend of hers." I said, sensing something was wrong.
"Devan." She gave me a sickly sweet smile, and I felt ready to barf.
"Allyson. Leah honestly isn't the kind of girl a guy like you should be hanging out with." I raised an eyebrow. Apparently she didn't like Leah.
"Oh, is that so? I'll decide who I should and shouldn't be hanging out with. And what did you mean by 'a guy like me', hmm?" She looked like she'd been slapped, and then turned around and left. Leah looked at me, nearly awestruck.

"You-you stood up to her. I don't think anyone has ever done that since she's been here." I nearly snorted. Wow. Our teacher, Ms. Fletcher, came in.
"Alright, class. Settle down. I would like you all to get out your textbooks, and turn to page 122, where the chapter about World War Two starts...." At the end of class, I waved bye to Leah, who gave me a tiny smile and waved back. We discovered we had five of our eight classes, including lunch and gym together, so I'd see her later. I knew there was something about her that I just didn't get, so I was glad for that.

Hm. Maybe I can ask her later. I dunno. She might not completely trust me yet. But, man! She's probably the nicest girl I've ever met, and she isn't like that Allyson girl. And she's pretty cute.  My face flushed as of thought about that. There was a part of me that felt bad for her, but I didn't know why yet. I guess I'd just have to wait and see if she'd trust me enough to tell me.

Author's note- Hello Keypers! This is my first time doing this type of fanfiction, so I apologize if it's not the greatest. I should have the real cover up soon, so sorry about the awful one. This book is dedicated to messenger237, who introduced me to Collins and Devan. ALove you guys!
