"Don't call me or talk to me ever again! We are done!"
His words kept ringing in my head.
I open my eyes. I don't know what time it is only that there is darkness. I could have been a week or so since I last saw him but I wasn't counting. I kept thinking about our happy times together. Thinking about how we first met during 10th grade.Flashback
I remember standing at my locker when he walked past laughing with his friends. Chase Cole. The football player, by extension the school hero and also the school player. Ugh. I have disliked him since middle school- how he swaggered, how he laughed, how he ignored everyone around him save for his friends ... his stupidly perfect smile. He stood tall above the rest at nearly 6 foot, a nice build with a tan and soot black hair. I never got too close to determine his eye colour. Ugh, what was I thinking?
This year he was in my English class. He sat directly behind me and I tried as hard as I could to ignore his presence.
"Hey, Ella," he whispered to me.
"Its eye-ella. Say it quicker it becomes Aella," I angrily replied in a whisper.
"Nah, you will always be Ella to me," he said with a small laugh, I could picture him smiling but I resisted the urge to turn around and see.
"So...Ella. Would you be willing to do me a favour?"
"What?" I asked back. Slightly intrigued.
"How would you... like to... give me a pencil?" he asked, jerk. I knew he deliberately said it slowly and for some reason I was quite disappointed that he didn't ask me out.
"Oh! Uh, y-yeah sure" I replied, clumsily. I took out a pencil, pushed my waist length black hair behind my ear and turned around to hand it to him.
I didn't realise we were so close because I could see his grayish blue eyes and perfect smile up close. It was like a eureka moment including the sunshine shining from behind him, magnifying his presence. Damn it, I liked this boy. Somehow I knew that we were meant to be, despite all the BS I tell myself about love being a fable, I knew that I would fall for this boy.
I smile back at him and he just grins wider. I stare at each other for a while before I see his lips move.
"The pencil?" he says
"Oh! Yeah," I reply with a smile "Here you go"
I turn around and we muddle through English class, half listening to the teacher drone on about Hamlet. As the bell rings and I pack up, I feel a tap on my shoulder. As I turn around there is a note attached to the pencil. Confused, I open it.
Will you go out with me?
I look up into his eyes, filled with hopeful anticipation and a genuine smile on his face this time.
"Yeah" I reply with a smile and a nod.
"Phew," he said with an exhale "You had me on the edge of my seat there. Here, let me take your bag," he stood up, grabbed my bag and walked me to my next class.
From there, we learnt to love one another. A love come softly story. We were loyal together and we stood by each other through thick and thin - my Mom's departure from my life, his family's disapproval of our relationship, living on our own and paying for our college tuition fees.
(Flashback over)
I thought we were strong, that he was my rock. But I was so wrong.
Suddenly my door is flung open.
I cringe as I am met with light, something I haven't in a while.
"Who is it?" I croakily ask, trying to see with little success.
"El! What happened to you!?" the person asks in shock.
"Callie?" I ask tentatively. Questioning if it is my best friend or not.
"No, its Anastasia Romanov! Who do you think it is?" she replies, with strong sarcasm.
Usually I would laugh. Any chance to chuck in a Disney reference she takes it.
"I thought you were dead!" she berated, entering my room. Suddenly the heavy, dark curtains were thrown back and I cringed once again. "No calls! No e-mails! No facebook! No Instagram! Weren't you questioning your existence?"
My phone, something I normally can't live without, has been switched off. After desperately hoping that Chase would call, I gave in to the realisation that he wasn't coming back. The constant ding of the messages and emails from my friends and co-workers reminding me that something was wrong. So I turned it off and left it on my bedside table.
"I couldn't get ahold of Prince Charming either!" she continued on, turning around and staring at me. All I saw was the silhouette of her golden blonde head and a-line figure behind half-closed eyelids. "What happened to both of you?"
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
"He left me" I whispered. Hoping that it wasn't true, that he was Punk'ing me.
"What?" she replied, shell-shocked.
I nodded, confirming it.
"Why?" she said, with shock on her pale face.
I had a horrible flashback of last night. I sighed and told her.
"I'm pregnant" I hear her sharp intake "He doesn't believe it's his, he packed up all his stuff and left. He wants nothing to do with me. Ever. The End"
"What?! That can't be it!" she paces, shaking her long blonde head. "Why wouldn't he want the baby?"
"He told me it was physically impossible to have children with me. He strongly doesn't believe otherwise."
"Where did he go?"
"To his father's"
She makes a barfing sound and I concur.
His father disliked me with a passion. I remember meeting him for the first time. I stroke the worry ring on my index finger with my thumb as I reminisce.
(Flashback)
Driving up to his father's house in the woods, holding Chase's hand, I smile and laugh up at him. He happily reciprocates it. We had been going out for a month now and this was another hurdle in our relationship that had to be jumped. Meeting the Coles.
"My dad is going to love you" he tells me.
"I hope so" as I smooth my knee length floral sundress.
"Don't worry" he replies with a laugh.
As we pull up to his father's 2 story home surrounded by thick trees.
I exit the red pickup truck and stare at it in awe.
"This was my Mom's dream house" he said with a hint of melancholy. His mother had passed away 3 years ago and he was still hit hard by it.
Coming around the truck, he holds my hand again. As we climbed the steps to the towering home, the door opens and I see a man in his forties. He has charcoal black hair, gray eyes and towers over me. I suddenly know where he got his towering height from. He is intimidating and his eyes bore into me.
"Dad!" Chase runs up and hugs him. He turns to me "Dad, this is Aella. Babe, this is my dad Fenrir"
"Mr Cole" his father spits out at me. Unwelcoming.
"Uh, nice to meet you Mr Cole" I set forward and offer my hand. He looks down at it and turns around as replicas of Fenrir in all different ages appear. I retract my hand and step closer to Chase.
"Ella, these are my brothers!" he looks towards them "I am the oldest. Then it goes Carter, Chris, Cade, Caleb, Cameron and Connor. We're all roughly a year apart."
Wow. His poor mother.
The youngest looking, Connor I think, was the first to speak.
"Is this the girl that took you away from me?" he said, with what I detected as venomous.
"Uh...Ch-Chase" I ask awkwardly, hoping he can diffuse this situation. The other boys just snicker and go away.
"Naw, buddy," he picks him up and throws him over his shoulder. "She is the girl who stole my heart." Aww.
"Well, tell her to give it back!" he said, hanging upside down. Youch. Dont try to sugar coat it kid. "I want to see Vanessa."
"Uh, Vanessa?" I ask Chase with hooded eyes.
"Oh, my ex Vanessa" he said awkwardly "We've been over since 2 months before you."
"Heh," his dad replies. I had almost forgotten he was there "They have been inseparable since they were kids." Well, not any more old man.
Needless to say, my first meeting with his family was like getting my wisdom tooth pulled without a sedative. Any subsequent meeting with him was just as awkward. On one or more occasion when they didn't think that I was listening I heard their whispers of his father and brothers condemning our relationship.
"She isn't meant for you, son"
"End it now, Bro"
"Seriously, you know there isn't a future with her, because of what she is"
"This isn't your destiny. You know what is expected of you."
He always replied the same.
"I love her. My heart is telling me that she will always be the one for me despite what any of you say."
I would smile when I heard it. We were one half of the same whole and I we fought for each other.
Until now
(End of flashback)
"I have to go and see him" I tell Callie.
I know that this is going to be another battle. This time, I am going to fight for us.
